Suicide prevention plans are now a mandatory requirement for veterinary practices, following new Practice Standards Scheme requirements introduced from 1 April 2026, for all three practice types - small animal, equine and farm animal.
To support practices, the RCVS Mind Matters and PSS Teams, alongside external experts have developed free and practical resources to help take the first steps towards putting together your suicide prevention plans. This Mental Health Awareness Week, explore the resources via our website, and free CPD on ‘Suicide awareness fundamentals’ via the RCVS Academy.

Veterinary nurses are essential to animal care.
Yesterday, we celebrated those joining and rejoining the Register at Veterinary Nurses Day in Edinburgh - a milestone marking the next step in their professional journey.
From newly qualified and returning professionals to those achieving advanced qualifications, including CertAVN, each one plays a vital role in practice.

It’s Veterinary Nursing Awareness Month (VNAM)
Throughout May, we’re celebrating the British Veterinary Nursing Association’s campaign!
This year’s theme, ‘Compassion and Empathy’, highlights the dedication and passion required to train and practise as a veterinary nurse.
Compassion shaped the creation of the RCVS Academy to better support veterinary teams. For the first week of VNAM, we are highlighting two of our SVN courses:
• SVN: RCVS & me – helping SVNs understand their professional responsibilities
• SVN: Stepping into practice – supporting SVNs’ transition into clinical practice
These courses are free to access via the link in our bio.
For any questions, reach out to us at [email protected].

We’ve published new advice on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) in practice, alongside updated guidance on clinical and client records.
Key points include:
• Professional judgement must not be delegated to AI
• Veterinary professionals remain responsible for decisions
• Clinical and client records should be clear, accurate and appropriately detailed
The updated guidance focuses on supporting safe, informed practice while remaining flexible as technology evolves.
