It’s two years to the day since we sold our dream home in Yorkshire and changed our life completely, buying a farm with 3 families in rural Wales. In this week’s Substack I tell the story of how it came about and how it’s going… link in profile to read 🌱 #substack #escapetothecountry #louiselockhart #communalliving #countrylife

One week from today, two artist-mothers in conversation. Today, I want to go a little deeper into the world of our second guest, Louise Lockhart @theprintedpeanut Louise Lockhart built The Printed Peanut from scratch– quite literally, beginning with a screen printing setup in the bathroom of a tiny apartment in Vancouver in 2012, and now based back in the UK. It started as a one-woman operation, and continues to be one. Louise is an avid people watcher and loves watching the world around her. Drawing inspiration from vintage textiles, folk art, children's books, and old print ephemera, Louise creates her work by cutting shapes from paper with a trusty pair of brass scissors– aiming always for a playful line and an unintended wonkiness. Her unique and recognisable work is often infused with humour and joy, making her designs loved and collected by a wide range of people. Alongside running The Printed Peanut, Louise works as a freelance illustrator on children's books for publishers including Nosy Crow and Bloomsbury, and on designs for clients such as Anthropologie, Liberty, and Mini Boden. I can't wait for our conversation next week! Join us as we talk about nurturing childhoods and nurturing independent practices all at once. And don't forget to register at the link in bio.

This week on SNIPS (my @substack where I’m sharing more in depth thoughts about this illustration lark) I’m discussing being a commercial artist, are you selling your soul? That tricky balance of wanting to be creatively satisfied vs. making things you know will sell and my honest thoughts on validation. Plus how many followers I’ve lost on instagram this week (at least it’s not 5 million like Taylor Swift). Some of the special original pieces I made for my current show on at @yspsculpture Cake Crumbs and Lemonade (ends 2nd August.) I didn’t have the confidence to make much original work but did the paper collages in a flurry at the end of a year of making all the (other 50) prints. I was absolutely ASTOUNDED that these sold on the opening night and has spurred me on to make more. A wall of original collages made by artist Louise Lockhart using paper, paint, rice glue, brass sheets and cyanotype on show at Yorkshire Sculpture Park now. #originalart #collage #louiselockhart #ysp #artist

Me and my mum always have a little April trip to see inspirational stuff and this week we’ve been in Prague! We didn’t know what to expect but top highlights: 1. Meeting @tereza_sediva_illustration in real life - we met on instagram because she asked how we made our kid’s cat cakes for birthday parties and now we have met in real life! She has made all these decorations and props for a festival ❤️ 2. A great antique shop called Bric a Brac in the old town 3. Open sandwiches 4. Hats at the Ethnographic Museum (which we loved) 5. Cakes 6. Traditional breakfast in a cafe where grannies sold knitted socks 7. A funeral cape from 1600s in the Design Museum 8 & 9 Toy shop (I bought lots of toys) 10, 11 & 12 Toy Museum (our favourite place) 13. Fruit at the market 14. Tulips 15. Golden Lane with no tourists after 5pm 16. Me and my mum 17. Photobooth

I’ve never had a solo show before and yes, it happens to be at YSP which is a big one! But I think these 5 things will apply when putting on an art exhibition anywhere, so save this if you are planning a show and comment below if you’ve experienced something I’ve missed here… 1. The pressure it puts you under. Knowing what you put on show will effectively be putting yourself on show. It makes you feel quite vulnerable. You want it to be top notch. You have to make a LOT of work in a short period of time so it mainly has to be good. 2. The expense of it all. Not only did I have to fork out for all the prints, brass pieces and frames but I had to take a year off from working too. Galleries usually take 50% off the retail price so you have to factor that in. 3. The time it takes to get things made, especially if you’re delegating that out to other people. I had all my prints made by professional printers who all had commitments and schedules, as did my picture framer. You have to factor in how long it takes to get your work back and ready to go. 4. The space your work takes up. This is different for everyone but for me that meant 60 prints all with 30 or 50 in the edition, which takes up a lot of room! I ended up buying 2 plan chests off eBay to stop them from getting bashed and damp. 5. Organisational skills. Putting on a show isn’t just about making nice art. I had to timeline how long each piece would take me to make and take to get printed, how long the framing would take, photograph each piece and note the dimensions + edition size, paper type plus the frame dimensions. I designed merchandise to go in the shop to a deadline + colouring sheets in the cafe. I made up the invitation list, found addresses and sent post to everyone. Wrote up the meaning behind each piece and have the story press ready as well as documenting every stage of the process for socials…. I think of this as an investment for myself - I now have a large amount of work ready to show, sell and exhibit, as well as having worked for a year developing and exploring my own artwork so it’s definitely been worth it! ✂️ #artexhibition #louiselockhart #artshow #artist #artistsofinstagram

Got a 3 page spread in the Yorkshire Post today in the magazine, how exciting! @theyorkshirepost 🍋 “Cake Crumbs and Lemonade, which takes over the upper space of the YSP visitor centre in West Bretton, showcases around 60 new works by Louise Lockhart that celebrate the charm of They feature high street shopfronts, bustling markets, seaside rituals, fairgrounds and hand-painted signs, all underpinned with a gentle humour. Lockhart’s evocative prints, which she creates through collage and printmaking using hand-cut paper shapes and expressive line drawings, may prompt fond memories that transport the viewer back in time, but they are also very much about today….”
