DUST: The Plates of the Present is a collective photographic archive, initiated between 2013 and 2018 by French painter Thomas Fougeirol and Hong Kong-born American artist and curator Jo-ey Tang. They have invited 136 artistsāincluding painters, graphic designers, photographers, filmmakers, musicians, and writers, of different nationalities, some working in collaborationā to produce a series of eight photograms in an improvised darkroom, which they named DUST, in Ivry-sur-Seine, France. As a large-scale collective work that constructs an archive in time, DUST: The Plates of the Present pays homage to a vanishing form of image-making.
DUST: The Plates of the Present was the subject of exhibitions at Baxter St / Camera Club of New York in 2015 (curator: Sonel Breslav, accompanied by the first book on the project, published by Blonde Art Books / Secretary Press), and at Praz-Delavallade gallery, Paris, in 2017; and was presented as a core element in the group exhibition WHFT at Le Chalet/Belleville, Paris, and with a concert at La Cantine, Paris by the New York art noise band DROOID5Z (Ben Dowell, Nathan Gwynne, Nickolaus Typaldos), both in 2013.
The catalogue is published on the occasion of the exhibition at Centre Pompidou. It includes double pages featuring the works of each artist, an interview with Mara Hoberman, Thomas Fougeirol, and Jo-ey Tang conducted in August 2020, and a foreword by Director of Centre Pompidou Bernard BlisteĢne. In English and French.
