The BIPOC Critics Lab is going bi-coastal! We're thrilled to partner with The Old Globe on co-hosting cultural critic Jose Solís’ BIPOC Critics Lab!
Partnering with the renowned Old Globe across the country will allow the opportunity for even more individuals to be impacted by this program’s ability to jumpstart their careers in arts journalism. These aligned values underscore a shared investment in expanding who gets to shape critical discourse and ensuring a more inclusive and representative American theater.

🆘 San Diego’s arts and culture community is facing an urgent threat.
Mayor Todd Gloria’s proposed FY27 City budget would reduce arts and culture funding by $11.8 million, effectively eliminating City grant funding for local arts organizations. According to the City’s Office of the Independent Budget Analyst, that is an 86.6% cut to the arts, while the cut to nearly every other city department averages 7%!
At The Old Globe, City support helps sustain programs that reach beyond our stages: arts education, military and veterans programming, community performances, and workshops in libraries, community centers, Title I schools, shelters, and neighborhoods across the city. These programs reach more than 30,000 San Diegans each year across every City Council District, free of charge.
A budget is a statement of values, and this one announces loud and clear that the arts don’t matter. We know that’s wrong. Arts and Culture define San Diego.
