This isn’t a story trying to rewrite history into something for the mainstream audience or celebratory in a traditional sense. Instead, it leans into the chaos, the contradictions, and the reality of what it meant to be a group of women carving out space in a scene that didn’t welcome them, even if it meant breaking a few things along the way. At its core, this is a film about identity just as much as it is about music. The Lunachicks weren’t just playing punk, they were living it in a way that felt confrontational, messy, and entirely their own. The documentary does a great job of letting that come through without overexplaining it. There’s a confidence in how the story is told, trusting that the band members' personalities will carry it, and they absolutely do. Theo Kogan, Gina Volpe, Sydney Silver, and the rest of the group bring a larger-than-life presence that’s impossible to ignore. What stands out isn’t just their chemistry (and struggles), but the way their individual perspectives shape the narrative. This isn’t a unified story where everyone remembers things the same way. There are differences, tensions, and moments where it becomes clear that time hasn’t smoothed everything over, and that gives the film its strongest backbone. What really pushes this beyond a standard music documentary is how unapologetically it celebrates who these women are and who they still are. I have a story about Ace Frehley that involves this jacket. He was my favorite member of Kiss like many others. He was playing at The Cat Club in NYC and me and my friends got all dolled up to go to the show, I was wearing this jacket and was hoping / determined to get it signed by Ace. Me and my friends were underage and were turned away at the door so we were sitting on a car outside the club all sad and dolled up in glitter and sparkly mini skirts and platform boots and so sad that we couldn’t get in. A man comes up to us and with a British accent says , “what’s wrong girls”? And we say “ We can’t get into see Ace” and he says , “Well I’m Peter Frampton and I’m going to get you in” and he walked us back up to the door the sea parted and he walked us inside and then split! Coolest dude ever!! I love this city so much!!!So we not only saw Frehley’s Comet play but I got my jacket signed by Ace.It’s pretty faded now but you can see it’s still there and obviously unforgettable. One of the most magical NYC nights of my teens. Held my pee for 7.5 hours and lived to tell the tale. Literally those I’ve proudly confessed that to, like it’s some world record, insisted I had to include it in my article, and honestly, I think Iggy would approve. In that moment I had two options, willpower or regret. It would have been weak of me to lose my front-row spot over a potty break. Usually I’m in the photo pit, with space to move around freely, in and out, seeing new and familiar faces all day. But this time I stayed planted, and now I’ve got a whole new respect for those front-row warriors who hold their ground for the artists they love. Never underestimate determination.
