Superman (2025) I really enjoyed this film; probably the best time I have had at cinema in a long time. It is not perfect but it works. It inspires hope for superhero films and also the DC Universe. More importantly, it inspires hope for cinema. Written and directed by James Gunn, the filmmaker known for his works in films like the Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy and “The Suicide Squad” (featuring Idris Elba). Gunn delivers yet another exciting entry in the superhero genre. I can only look forward to more in this new direction known as the DCU. Let’s talk about the casting… David Corenswet is perfect for Superman. The 32-year-old actor, standing at 6’4”, perfectly absolutely embodies the role. The problem with this version of Superman by James Gunn is the writing of the character. His “Superness” was a bit watered down to enable his “humanity” to shine. Gunn overdid that part in my opinion. Also, the suit is probably my least favorite since the original films. I loved this Lex Luthor rendition by Nicholas Hoult. He delivers beyond expectations. I only wish this version by James Gunn was better developed in terms of backstory. I needed to understand his motives and the motives of his staff as an audience. Rachel Brosnahan delivers the strongest Lois Lane character since Margaret Kidder in the original films. If I’m being honest this may actually be the best Lois Lane ever. Together with Corenswet, they provide probably the sweetest couple chemistry I have seen in a long while in cinema. It felt so genuinely natural like they were made for each other. Kenyan-American Edi Gathegi shines as Michael Holt aka Mister Terrific. A not-so-popular character in the DC comic lore but is about to become a fan favorite and a popular superhero figure. Fun fact: in the DC comics, Michael Holt is regarded as the 3rd smartest person in the world behind Bruce Wayne and Lex Luthor. The movie is visually appealing. It is bright and colorful with minimal dark scenes. The production design and cinematography are top notch. The movie never feels small or cheap. You feel the scope and scale of the production in every scene. I loved this score by John Murphy. Swipe to continue

15 years ago we got the animated film titled “How to Train Your Dragon”. Now we have a live-action remake, let’s talk about it! How to Train Your Dragon (2025) I never thought I’ll say this, but this live-action remake feels better and more grounded than the original animated film. This film surprised at how good it actually is because I never gave it a chance cos I felt it was unnecessary. I was so wrong. I’m happy they made a live-action version. “How to Train Your Dragon” feels like it’s own film. It has already surpassed the original film in box office earnings despite costing less in production and I totally see why. It refreshes the franchise for a newer generation of film audiences and it gives the older generation a better feel of the story. Filmmaker Dean DeBlois who was behind all previous animated films in the franchise, returns to write and direct this live-action film. He outdid his own original work cos this is definitely an upgrade. Mason Thames shines as Hiccup. He delivers a worthy performance, one Jay Baruchel will be proud of. Thames makes the role his own. Nico Parker (daughter to Thandiwe Newton) delivers a nuanced version of Astrid, making her not just a love interest but also a young woman with her own ambitions. Gerard Butler is Stoick the Vast, Berk’s chieftain and Hiccup’s father any time, any day, any dimension and any universe. To take it a notch higher, Gerard Butler delivers one of his best acting performances in this film. I absolutely loved him more in this. One of my issues with Toothless in the animated films is that the dragon felt more like a pet rather than the fearsome depiction and hype of a Night Fury. That was improved in this film. You see Toothless’ potential more and reasons why Night Fury is the most terrifying dragon in the mythology. The other dragons look better and even more dangerous. So yes this movie was a cash grab idea, but it totally works as its own film. If this were the first movie ever in the franchise, it would have been an absolute hit.
