It’s hard to think about self promotion at the moment, but if you’re looking for a little escape, read on. If you feel like your heart and mind might benefit from a sonic blast right now, if you love music but haven’t been to a show in a while, nothing can take the place of seeing a band live. Watching and listening to human beings live on stage who drove across the country in a van just to play their music for you in one of those beautiful 200-300 capacity dark stinky sticky rooms that is becoming a rarity. But don’t believe a word you hear about it dying, it’s alive and well, it’s just in a lull moment, just like vinyl was for a while. It’s fermenting, ready to come back stronger than ever. Happy Birthday The Bansch. 21 years of hilarity, grace, brilliance and beauty. Here we are in Tuscon Arizona, a lucky father and his daughter on tour, on the road, on your birthday. A few days ago in Dallas we spent way too much time at Dealey Plaza talking history to the trees that saw everything, breezed through the Sixth Floor Museum filled with all those redacted truths, drove to Waco and felt real sadness at Mt Carmel and real joy in the gift shop of the Dr. Pepper museum, in Austin we went on that long hike around Lady Bird lake talking seriously about the world we’re in while it continued to fall apart around us. This whole trip I’ve been blown away by how you listen… you’re such a great conversationalist. serious and thoughtful, and also funny as hell in the passenger seat. all those miles, all those laughs. How many times did we sing the Wichita Lineman? not enough! and that pink blur sunset that lasted the whole way to Gila Bend, you saw it first. you pointed it out cause you knew it would make me feel something. Your activism. Your community service feeding people that need it most. cooking for them in your tiny dorm kitchen. Your knitting. Your photography. Your voracious appetite for great books and your ability to chew through them. I love reading next to you by the way. Maybe what i’ve been most proud of these days is your phone calls to your friends. I love overhearing you in these small hotel rooms. hearing the joy in your voice. hearing the confidence in conversation. the love. the openness. how much you miss each other. that’s all you Isabel. This Friday, November 14 I play my last solo acoustic show of 2025 at McCabe’s in Santa Monica California. It’s a great sounding venue, it’s a Friday night, I go on at 8 PM. There’s no opener. It’s all ages. I’ll be hanging out after the show with lots of merch and waiting to say hi to you. You who make all this possible. This solo acoustic tour has just filled me with so much energy creatively, and physically. I’m feeling pretty excited about the new songs. I’ll play a few more when I see you Friday. When my mom died in 2004, I took home a gold cardboard box filled with snapshots, newspaper clippings, ticket stubs, show flyers, cassettes, and video tapes she’d saved throughout my early years, when I was just a kid playing in rock clubs around Boston from 1980 to 1984. When I got home I stuck that box on a shelf and avoided it for years. That time of my life was tricky for me. My memory of it was soured by loss, regret, and sorrow.  I never really knew what I felt sad about or what I was avoiding.  All I had was a vague feeling that I had failed to be the version of success the people around me hoped I’d be. Over the pandemic I pulled out a random photo for a Throwback Thursday post.  A kind time portal opened up and I revisited a version of myself I hadn’t had access to in decades. With that came a whole batch of stream-of-consciousness stories, each one of them based on a snapshot pulled out of the cardboard box. Memories flowed eagerly: the scene, the mood, the people around me, the hopes we all had trying to be something too fast too young. There was plenty of sadness, but I also found a deep affection for the people I knew back then. The sorrow started to soften. It began to feel more like tenderness. I stumbled on this quote from Carl Jung that pushed me to keep searching and writing about whatever surfaced.  “Until you make the unconscious conscious, it will direct your life and you will call it fate.” I’m a songwriter, and these stories feel more like songs to me. I wrote them like that. To be experienced one at a time, or one after the other like a thoughtfully sequenced LP.  This would never have been a book without the urging and interest from Robin Brunelle who designed it and JC Gabel at Hat & Beard who both thought it should exist in the world as printed matter.
