“I began painting after practicing psychoanalysis for 10 years and I am largely self-taught. Like the analytic process, art is dialogic: it is an experience in the making and the receiving, as vital as any other language. Color, indexical mark making, and symbols (such as archways, crosses, and waves) materialize in my paintings as means to convey and process personal and global events such as my daughter’s sudden passing, my husband’s life-threatening illness, political upheaval. Since my move from Los Angeles to the Bay area in 2021, mid-pandemic, my paintings have incorporated my untamed field and now a growing orchard and garden.” —Julia Schwartz

“My lens onto the natural world is influenced by new developments in plant science that show how connected we are to our environment. Our surroundings flow through us – microbes, fungi, viruses – everything we share the planet with is, in a way, part of us. These ideas show up in my paintings in the relationships of line, colour, and shape that speak to how being human is to be part of the larger elemental and molecular system that connects all carbon-based beings. This feels to me like a story of interdependence and connection, and also of hope; especially important in a time when painting the natural world feels inseparable from concerns about its fragility.” —Amanda Mears

“I create vibrant abstract paintings to translate the resonance of my time spent bonding with nature. Alone and immersed in the textures, scents, and feel of mossy forests, bodies of water, and wildflower meadows, I feel the complexities of belonging and identity become simple and clear. Painting is the process that allows me to fully absorb this perspective, offering a window into the inherent beauty and shared power within our reciprocal relationship with the natural world. Hints of symbolism in a splash of water, the flight of birds, blossoming flora, or the reach of branches develop as I build instinctual layers, celebrating the symbiotic relationship within all life. My practice spans an evolution as a clinical social worker, photographer, and mother; it is a passionate inquiry into the relationships between caregiving, creative expression, solitude with nature, and sense of self. My process often begins with intuitive work using cyanotype. In collaboration with nature, I embed impressions of myself and my surroundings directly into the canvas. My imagination and memories unfold through soak-staining and emotive applications of acrylic, spray paint, oil, and pastel, allowing materials to perform as I remember the visceral touch of nature, resulting in a process of play with with color and form.” —Mary Lynn Burke
