Comedy is serious business! I think getting a good comedy shot is the hardest headshot to get. It should be authentic and achieving authenticity requires patience and a good game plan. Here’s what I think goes into getting a great comedy shot and what you can use them for! Having strategy with your headshots will get you into more rooms and more specific auditions. Help casting directors help you! . . . #headshot #headshots #castingdirector #castingdirectors #tvfilm #comedy #comedyreels #uprightcitizensbrigade #commercials #auditions #michaelkushnerphotography

Agents and managers often request procedural, commercial, and slate shots — but I’m seeing more and more the need to have shot that works for dystopian and end of the world projects like Handmaid’s Tale and The Last of Us. I always say, if you want to be considered for a specific genre of tv, film, and theatre, you need a photo of yourself that shows you belonging in the world of which they are casting. Make them see you. Here are some great examples I took that I feel represent great Dystopian or End of the World headshots. Tonight we open Do You Speak Mexican? at @groupcoretheatre and I couldn’t be more excited. @egarciaimprov was my high school drama teacher who changed the course of my life. She taught me what it meant to connect, listen, and play with an audience. She, to this day, is why I wear mismatching socks. She wrote the forward of my book How to be a Multi-Hyphenate in the Theatre Business because she is the definition of a multi-hyphenate and introduced the concept to me. She turned our high school classroom into an Equity house by night. She had us create our own one person solo plays for our *sophomore* year final — not senior. She taught us the importance that politics plays with theatre — and would start class with showing us clips of FREAK by @johnleguizamo And then I met @chrisperez1978 through Garcia who showed me the same inspiration. His play Flying Lessons is a story of survival, grief, and humor. He’s got story beyond story to tell you and makes you feel like you’re the only person in the room when he talks to you. That’s how his show feels too — like you’re the only people in a space, together. I chose to produce this show with Core because we are fractured as a society, as a country, and as a people. We are watching history repeat itself with the world turn against people of color, immigrants, disabled folks, Jews, and LGBTQIA+ people. This is my way to remind audiences that we are all in this together and our paths are not all that different. We must support each other. So please, come to Warwick, NY and see this straight-from-Miami duo-monologue comedy. Part stand up, part drama, part political piece, part flan… Do You Speak Mexican? will leave you feeling touched, inspired, and full of love and life. ¡Dalé! . . . #cubanamerican #theatre #regionaltheatre #coretheatregroup #michaelkushnerphotography

🗣️ NEW EPISODE featuring The Balusters’ Kayli Carter. The episode is available wherever you listen and download podcasts! 🎧 This podcast episode features an interview between Michael Kushner and actress Kayli Carter, focusing on her Broadway debut in the play “The Balusters.” Carter discusses her multifaceted career as an actor, writer, and educator. Carter shares her collaborative approach to performance and the creative process behind bringing her character to life on stage. ✌🏻 Throughout the conversation, Carter delves into her philosophy on authentic acting techniques, emphasizing the importance of emotional honesty over manufactured responses. She explains her preference for receiving genuine feedback from fellow actors rather than relying on audience reactions, highlighting how this approach helps her maintain the integrity of her performances and develop more meaningful artistic connections. 🎨 The episode also addresses broader challenges within the theater industry, including the difficulty actors face in obtaining constructive feedback and the importance of building authentic artistic communities. Carter and Kushner explore the play’s central themes around communication and tolerance, while also discussing the lack of recognition for ensemble work in major theater awards, raising important questions about how collaborative artistic achievements are valued in the industry. @kaylicarter . . . #thebalusters #broadway #multihyphenate #dearmultihyphenate #michaelkushnerphotography

Let’s chat commercial headshots and the trick to getting a great one. I’ve heard from many of my clients that the commercial headshot scares them the most and I can see why. Sometimes they can feel disingenuous and fake — but not when we photograph them. There are lots of ways to photograph a commercial headshot and it starts by understanding where you fit in the world of commercials. Ask yourself: ❓What product can I sell? ❓What are they wearing in headshots? ❓What would this character say? Answering these questions are a pretty good way to tackle this look. Poke fun at it and have a great time. . . . #headshots #headshotphotography #photographytip #actorslife #michaelkushnerphotography

🎭 Did you know that one of the great loves of my life are Broadway flops? While they sting in the moment, I truly believe that they are one of the most important contributors to building the future of Broadway. 🗣️ Since I love talking about them so much, I’ve decided to make a new video series sharing my love of flaps with you! Please welcome FAST FLOP FACTS: 90 Second Broadway Flop History. 😎 My goal is to share with you the musicals that walked so others can run. So many flops are amazing musicals that were simply just ahead of its time and possibly produced in the wrong moment. Look at Carrie — a show that flopped but found massive success about 40 years later. 😕 But, yes, some flops were just plain bad, wild, or produced incorrectly. I hope to educate you on the wild Broadway. History of forgotten shows, flops, and screw ups that are incredible stories all on their own. And who knows you might find your next favorite musical! . . . #broadwayflops #broadway #theatrekid #theatrehistory #allansherman

🎞️ clients on film 🎞️ There is something so simple, celebratory, and mysterious about film that I love. During the shoot, clients can’t see the progress like you can with a digital shoot, so there’s a sorta wild abandon that happens when you sorta say, “well, I hope we get it.” We always do. And then there’s the wait for them to develop. What if I don’t feel the same way I did in the studio? What if I wore the wrong clothes? What if…? And then we see the photos and those feelings go away. Here are just some of my favorites. I love my clients. I love what they bring to the table. I love creating with them. . . . #pentax #filmphotography #nycphotographer #broadway #michaelkushnerphotography
