SHELLEY SHORT
Shelley Short is an American singer-songwriter known for her evocative blend of folk, alt-country, and acoustic music. Rooted in Portland, Oregon, she draws deep inspiration from landscapes like the desert, mountains, and especially the Oregon coast.
Short’s music is marked by a warm, vulnerable voice, with lyrics that explore love, grief, resilience, and self-discovery.
DARREN HANLON
The Darren Hanlon universe can be summed up in two words: human connection. He has built a self-sustaining career via his catalog of songs alone. His shows are built around his narrative songwriting and storytelling, and his intimate connection with the audience. He has recorded many albums and spent years traveling the far-flung corners of the world on his own terms.
MINTA & THE BROOK TROUT (SOLO)

EDIT - MELBOURNE SHOW HAS BEEN MOVED TO THE NORTHCOTE SOCIAL CLUB
I talked Eric Isaacson into coming to Australia this month to come with me to the Kimberley for a bit of an adventure trip, field recording and hanging out with Kankawa Nagarra. As he’s come all this way I’ve talked him into doing his latest music lecture show. It’s called a People’s History of American Music and it’ll be a wild ride. It’s a hard one to promote as he’s created not much of a digital footprint. He’s a rare and reclusive little creature. But a towering figure for me. He’s given me a musical education, mostly from sitting on a stool at the counter of Mississippi Records in Portland. He’s designed record covers for me and Kankawa and heaps of other albums I love (he also refuses to be credited for any art he does).
What is this show? It’s basically a lecture/film/slideshow. Eric says: “Overall, it’s the story of how the powers that be are trying to control music and how people find ways to work outside of puritans, corporations and tech lords’ systems despite these social engineers’ best efforts.
Don’t worry, it’s a fun telling of this tale with lots of great music, images and wild stories.”
Eric will also have piles of LPs for sale at each show (while stocks last) with titles not available in any Australian stores.
@themeofwe will open up with a short set of folk music.
So please spread the word! Please note, Cinema Nova in Melbourne won’t list it on their site for some reason but trust me it’s definitely happening. And Sydney will sell out for sure so be quick.

this is it! it’s out there - Please Make Room For Me Please is a duet with the wonderful Shelley Short, aka @themeofwe . a love song, when love is no longer that young and neither are you, not really. a love song for when you’re older and grumpier, and still have found someone you’re fond of enough to ask: please make room for me, please 🥺
.
recorded in @louvaaadeus by Nelson Carvalho. mixed and mastered by Eduardo Vinhas at @goldenponystudio . cover art by @fithesleepyhead over a photo of one of my many neighbourhods: more on all of this in the upcoming days.

What do you do when you’re stuck at home and can’t get out to see your old friend play a show on his first Australian tour in 15 years? You bring him to your town! This coming Monday the 10th of March Jeffrey Lewis will play a very intimate show at qube226 here in Gympie.
Jeffrey Lewis is an incredible songwriter and comic book creator from New York city. I first saw him at a music festival in Wales in 2005 and was stunned. His set was incredibly inspiring, opening my mind to completely new and different songwriting possibilities, I went straight home, washed my muddy clothes and wrote 4 of my own in record time (Happiness is a Chemical, Spend Xmas Day with Me, the Loaf, My Life A blur).
We kept crossing paths at festivals around the place and in 2009 I convinced Jeffrey to come to Australia and tour with me. So much fun! Since then he’s gone from strength to strength. I mean this guys work ethic would make a bee feel ashamed. So please come along and see this very unique event as part of Jeffrey’s triumphant return to Australia!
Shelley Short will play a short opening set which will be her first show in Gympie too! She also designed this high tech poster.

this is Shelley Short. we met through our mutual friend Greg Edwards - @draught_volunteer - in Portland, OR - we were playing there with @theyreheadingwest and Shelley was kind enough to set up a show just so we could open. turns out there’s so many bands in Portland they won’t even let you play for free if you’re not paired up with a local band. we fell in love with her voice and music - not long after that she released Pacific City, one of my favourite records.
this was in 2014, September. in 2019 we were able to return the favour and have her play with us in Lisboa when she was over here on tour with @nekocaseofficial .
all of this to say: we’re very lucky to have @themeofwe sing on the upcoming Minta & The Brook Trout single. it’s a sweet song called Please Make Room For Me Please, and it comes out this Friday
~
This is how Shelley tells it:
I met this crew of talented musicians on a cool rainy night in Portland Oregon, I want to say 10 years ago but it could be less or more ( probably more). Our mutual and trusted music pal Greg had set the show up at a little cozy spot called The Outpost ( I think?) which is no longer there. He must have thought our music would fit well together sharing a bill, and he was right! I’m so glad that show happened because that night was the beginning of a beautiful musical and supportive relationship that has lasted a long time.
