Before we map strategies for the future, we begin with people.
One component of this was through our Think Tank Hackathon, held in Seattle last week at
@fredhutch
We opened the day by listening to two partner physicians who have worked with us for over 20 years: Dr. Silvana Torselli of Guatemala and Prof. Nicholas Anthony Othieno‑Abinya of Kenya.
Dr. Torselli spoke about equity, not as an abstract concept, but as a daily reality.
🗨️“Access to treatment is not only a medical goal,” she reminded the room. “It is a matter of equity.”
Prof. Othieno‑Abinya shared what access truly means for his colleagues who provide care.
🗨️“The fact that people can be given free medicine to treat others makes them very, very excited,” he said. “They are willing to do anything to continue the program.”
These perspectives grounded the more than 50 Think Tank members, partners, board members, and staff when envisioning future possibilities. After hearing what it truly takes to deliver care across long distances with limitations such as lack of diagnostics, medications, and healthcare professionals, participants broke into four Hackathon teams. Their task was to design bold, geography‑agnostic solutions that could expand access to treatment and help shape decisions across oncology and global health. All teams' solutions involved multifunctional digital platforms, many of which are AI-powered, to provide patients with immediate treatment information, connections to providers, and to be a hub for peer NGO connections.
Thank you to everyone who spent the day helping shape our strategic plan. We are grateful for your time, expertise, passion, and commitment. Together, we can reach 100,000 patients annually by 2031!
