Final shots of “D&H Canal, Hoagie (after Henry)” 2025 located in Wurtsboro, NY
Some history and context for those that are interested:
This mural was created in celebration of the 200th Anniversary of the groundbreaking of the D&H Canal. (Which happened across the street from where the mural is located.)The canal connected Pennsylvania to Kingston, NY during a time before railroads, in the late 1800s. This connection fueled the Industrial Revolution bringing anthracite coal to NYC by way of the Hudson River. The coal in turn powered steam engine machines that produced all sorts of goods. The canal project was the most expensive ever undertaken at the time.
A point of interest that inspired the mural was the role that children played in this process. Kids would walk and tend to the donkeys that pulled the boats over long stretches of the canal. For more info about the canal’s history, check out

The composition of the figures was taken directly from a painting by an artist name E.L. Henry, called “On the Towpath.” Henry lived in Cragsmoor, NY during the same time that the canal was in operation just a few miles from where the mural is located today.

The pattern that overlays the colorful background is inspired by wallpaper patterns of the time that would have been able to be produced en
masse thanks the coal that was transported by these boats. The black and white figures find themselves in the past while the color background brings the viewer forward into our time period.
There were a lot of firsts for me with this mural project… first time painting on corrugated metal, first time using spray paint for a majority of the artwork, first time on scaffolding.
I am extremely grateful to Jackie, Donna, Kelly and Rick
@wurtsboro_board_of_trade for all of their help and for giving me this opportunity. They work so hard to secure the funds and manage the projects that bring the arts to Wurtsboro and Sullivan County.
