Ten years ago today, I lost a friend to suicide.
I still miss him, though to have had such a bright and close companion in the crucial last year of secondary school will always be one of the greatest blessings of my youth.
Before he was my friend, he was a son, an older brother, and when by himself, a voracious reader.
#mensmentalhealthawareness, #malesuicide, and the struggle for acceptance of pain and perplexity lies at the heart of The Lit Path’s mission to bring the power of the novel into these conversations.
The Lit Path does not make the case that reading great works of fiction simplifies the path to greater understanding and acceptance of oneself and others.
Simplicity is, after all, the #manospheremovement’s biggest appeal to young men, and the very thing that undermines both it and them.
Rather, reading novels may complicate things just enough to help us live more easily with our own confusion, and perceive the reality of others more clearly.
Before we announce the first episode of the series, I wanted to take this moment to honour the guy in whose memory it was launched in part to serve.
