There's a whole lot of new people here after the essay I wrote for @currentaffairsmag so I thought I should introduce myself.
I have a PhD in Gothic studies and write books on film, politics and philosophy. My last two books were on contemporary horror film and an introduction to utopian philosophy.
You can support my work and writing over on patreon, and find my blog at the link in the description. I am also the co-host of the podcast @horrorvanguard - a show about horror movies, politics and philosophy (if you liked the Current Affairs piece, I think you'll be into the show too).
And I also freelance - if you or your outlet are looking for a writer on movies, culture, politics or horror my DMs are open.
Check out the links in the bio - and thank you so much for reading. Stay spooky friends 👻👻👻👻
Do you want it?
If by “it” you mean Gretchen Felker-Martin’s 2025 queer horror novel, “Black Flame,” the answer is 100% yes!
We are joined by Jon Greenaway, writer, co-host of the “Horror Vanguard” podcast, and certified gothic literature understander. Together we enter this story about being so horny it warps reality, trauma-haunted art, supernatural resistance against patriarchal violence, and Rodney Dangerfield.
Have the lambs stopped screaming Clarice? That’s right: Kayte and Jay are joined by author Jon, the Lit Crit Guy from Horror Vanguard to tackle a big one: Silence of the Lambs! We talk through genre, gender, class and cannibalism in this monster of a film.Â

February reading roundup - a shorter month but three excellent books.
First, Daniel Loick's book on the concept of private property was an invaluable resource for my next book managing to be generative and rigorous while also being less than 200 pages.
David Peace's GB84 is a nightmare - an incredible book that excavated the horror of the miners strike with brutal clarity. The final pages are utterly bleak, setting the stage for the Britain we live in today.
Finally, Persona by Aoife Josie Clements -- I picked this up on something of an impulse but found it to be a really impressive debut -- strange and ambitious it starts as a grotesque body horror before becoming something more universal and maybe even more frightening.

In a @currentaffairsmag story about how horror films "can have a powerful role to play in bringing the violence of our treatment of fellow animals to light,"
@thelitcritguy and @skopicalex describe the abuses to which animals are subjected in #factoryfarms and slaughterhouses. It's something that most media outlets don't do, despite the fact that billions of humans eat these animals every day. Thank you.
