I think that finding ourselves on the ‘other’ side of history has made us second-guess our traditions, our way of life, and our very own identity. I just hope that through this story of the Lorwa, we get to show that not all culture is bad. As we work to take out the bad, the evil, like early forced marriage and FGM - we should shine a light on the rich, deep and beautiful parts of who we are. Because what else is the ‘present’ except a gift of a new page to write a better story?
Yes, our cultures, languages, and creative expression are rich, deep and beautiful, and it’s high time we dug deep into them. #StoryOfTheLorwa
Snippets from today’s session where the girls learnt how to make Lorwa Journals inspired by their beautiful cultural skirts called Lorwa, once worn to signify early marriage but now reclaimed for their freedom and becoming.
A big thank you to @the.name.is_kara for facilitating this session & teaching us!

YeeYa Creative Camp is officially underway 🌿✨
For the next few weeks, these brilliant girls from Karamoja will be gathering to learn, create, experiment, and tell stories through fashion, music, film, and creative expression.
From making their very own Lorwa skirts to exploring sound, movement, and storytelling, the camp is becoming a space for creativity, sisterhood, confidence, and imagination to co-exist in bliss.
So much beauty, talent, dance and laughter already filling the room. 💛
This is the beginning of something special.
