Weโve been camping out in the kubo and have remembered just how cozy it is. Part-cabin, part-treehouse, part-shackโ though โkuboโ is its most endeared name. I propped the small table against this side of the kubo and this was my view while I wrote.
Have been sleeping so well here. Somehow, this room understands.
When I think about the kubo, I think of this song. I love it all so much.
Time is funny: it feels long enough since the typhoon that the kubo looks as though nothing happened, except if you look closer (wind marks on mood, the stripping of paint, a dent where a tree trunk landed), yet it hasnโt been long enough for us to avoid getting spooked by the slightest sound of rain. Weโre collectively traumatized, therefore, transformed.
Here she is again, all patched up and dry! ~Camille
I canโt help but miss the rain a little, especially when you can hide away in a room like this. But itโs time to take in the sun and warmth in our little corner of La Union. The sand bar has shifted and the โsand cliffsโ that got pushed in by the south swell have flattened out, leaving one with more room to enjoy the beach again. Take your dog out for a walk. Lay on a towel and let your mind drift. You know where to find us when you need a day like this.
Which version of the Jackfruit House did you meet? ๐
The very first hut (2014) was a traditional kubo with a spacious balcony where we would hang out after surfing. We loved that bamboo fence but it bogged down from so much rainwater during a particularly long monsoon season.
For the second version (2019), the kubo would take on a major makeover and the little hut would look more like the modern sea cabin that stands today. The original gate made wise use of leftover materials, something H always considered when designing a space.
Then in 2022, we reinforced the gate and made an area for lounging below the kubo. We kept the place to ourselves for the longest time but now we are happy to share a piece of our La Union history with friends, family, and like-minded folks! โบ๏ธ
Found an old photo of the Jackfruit House circa 2016! Added it to our guestbook so friends could know more about our roots.

๐ด๐๐ก๐๐๐๐๐๐ข๐ โ๐๐ก๐๐๐๐โ๐ฆ๐๐๐ข๐ . The jackfruit is the largest tree fruit, a species of tree in the breadfruit family. Also in the same classification as fig and mulberry (๐๐๐๐๐๐๐๐). Commonly known as ๐ญ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข, or ๐ฏ๐ข๐ฏ๐จ๐ฌ๐ข in the Visayan regions. โ๐๐ข๐ค๐ข ๐ฎ๐ข๐ฏ๐ต๐ฆ๐ช๐จ๐ข,โ for the buttery fruit petals. Good to eat whether unripe or sweet.
To us, the jackfruit is a symbol that no matter the season, to the one who patiently perseveres, fruits will come. ๐
