This week’s episode of The I in Us is our IDAHOBIT show and what better way for Cody and Paul to bring awareness to intersex discrimination than to invite two international intersex delegates from the recent Women Deliver Conference to join the show - Crystal Hendricks (joining from South Africa), and for the first time on The I in Us, Hiker Chiu (joining from Taiwan). Held in Naarm (Melbourne) from 27–30 April, Women Deliver 2026 served as a rallying point for feminist solidarity, resistance, and reimagination. It centered the leadership, knowledge, and resistance of feminists, activists, and First Nations leaders from across the Oceanic Pacific, and the world. Born in 1966 in Taiwan, Hiker Chiu is a trailblazing intersex human rights activist who has dedicated over a decade to advocating for intersex rights in Asia. Hiker's journey of self-discovery and advocacy began at the age of 42 when they stumbled upon the term "intersex" while watching the film "XXY". This pivotal moment led Chiu to found the Organization Intersex International-Chinese (OII-Chinese) in 2008, a platform for Chinese-speaking intersex people to access information, awareness, and peer support. Crystal Hendricks is a queer intersex feminist and human rights defender who has been at the forefront of advocating for policy change for intersex people. She currently serves as the Sex Characteristics Programme Officer at ILGA World, and in the capacity sat on two Women Deliver conference panels, including at the launch. With over seven years of experience in intersex advocacy, Crystal’s work is driven by a deep commitment to ensuring that intersex people can freely exercise their rights and freedoms. Please join us this Thursday May 14, 6-7pm Aust EST to hear Crystal and Hiker share their experiences of the Women Deliver Conference, and much more, via JOY94.9, .au/player/index.html, or iHeartRadio. On this week’s episode of The I in Us Paul and Cody look forward to welcoming Queensland-based intersex community member Peter Low to the show. Peter is a 31-year-old queer intersex human being living on the Sunshine Coast in Queensland, who was born with the intersex variation 47 XXY (medically known as Klinefelter Syndrome). In his early 20s Peter went through a near-death experience, the result of a drug-induced psychosis caused by medical malpractice in the way his intersex variation was treated. It cracked his life open. What followed was years of intersex human rights advocacy, deep spiritual practice, and the slow inner work of healing his trauma and meeting his own shadow. Peter travelled the world, sat through more retreats than he can count, and slowly built himself back as someone who could turn what happened to him into something useful. Stepping into advocacy work showed Peter possibilities he'd never imagined possible, possibilities that pushed him far outside his comfort zone and gave him the confidence to forge his own path as an entrepreneur, and a life of travel, building, and being of service to others. Today Peter works as a coach and facilitator under his own brand, My Human Design Coach. On this week’s episode of The I in Us we’ll learn about Peter’s journey, self-discovery, transformation and the message and awareness he now wants to bring to the world, particularly young and older intersex people: “your story isn't over, and healing is possible.” Please tune in this Thursday May 7, 6-7pm Aust EST via JOY94.9, iHeartRadio, .au/player/index.html or by downloading the new JOY94.9 apps.

On this week’s episode of The I in Us Paul and Cody look forward to welcoming Queensland-based intersex community member Alex David to the show. Alex discovered they were intersex in 2001, just after finishing Year 12, finding out that doctors could not determine what sex they were at birth. Despite that Alex was raised as female until age 18, after which they realigned to male upon finding out that they were genetically XY. Later, at age 31, Alex began to identify as non-binary. Alex was a Director of Intersex Human Rights Australia (now Interaction for Health and Human Rights) from 2015 to 2019, during which time they participated in the drafting of the Darlington Statement, in 2017. Alex has appeared on the television programs, Insight (SBS TV) and You Can't Ask That (ABC TV) and over the years have appeared in various media publications, spreading the word about intersex and helping to raise the profile of intersex and intersex human rights in the community. Guaranteed to be another thought-provoking and informative show, please tune in this Thursday April 30, 6-7pm Aust EST via JOY94.9, iHeartRadio, .au/player/index.html or by downloading the new JOY94.9 apps: Android: /store/apps/details?id=au.org.joy iOS: /au/app/joy-94-9/id490949910 … Lastly, please visit .au/theiinus to subscribe and listen to over 90 previous episodes of the show, dating back to early 2024. Intersex people have diverse bodies and identities but are unified by experiences of pathologisation, enduring human rights violations, stigmatisation, and mental health issues stemming from shame and secrecy. In 2017, at two Intersex Peer Support Australia (IPSA) retreats, participants were invited to contribute anonymous reflections, writings and drawings and letters to their past or future self, parents, friends, lovers, doctors… or anyone who has had a significant role in an aspect of their life as someone with an intersex variation. Parents, carers, partners and family members of someone who has an intersex variation, were also invited to a write a letter to their past self or future self, their child as a younger or older person, their partner or lovers, their child’s doctors…or anyone who played a significant role in an aspect of their journey supporting someone with an intersex variation. These writings were published in 2023 as a wonderful book, Unspoken. On this episode of The I in Us Cody and Paul will welcome back two previous guests and members of the Australian intersex community, Bonnie Hart and Steph Lum, who were responsible for leading these immersive retreat workshops and the project that brought the book to light. This invaluable work also led to the publication of an academic paper, “Intersex lived experience: trauma and posttraumatic growth in narratives” (2021), authored by Bonnie and her colleague at the School of Psychology and Counselling, Faculty of Health, Queensland University of Technology, Jane Shakespeare-Finch. In addition to discussing this unparalleled project, we will learn how members of the intersex community can contribute to the next publication: Unspoken 2, and one lucky listener will win a copy of Unspoken. So be sure to tune in this Thursday April 16, 6-7pm AEST time via JOY94.9, iHeartRadio or .au/player/index.html, for what is bound to be another jam-packed informative show.

Alfred learned he has XXY sex chromosomes at the age of 32 while trying to have a family, and since 2014 has been at the forefront of sex chromosome and intersex medical and human rights advocacy in the Netherlands and internationally. As chair of the Dutch Klinefelter Association (DKA), Alfred has been actively championing the interests of DKA members, focusing on strengthening partnerships with Dutch, European, and international (patient) organisations, promoting and supporting scientific and practice-oriented research, and building and maintaining long-term relationships with healthcare professionals. He contributes to his organisation by promoting the visibility of his community and making a demonstrable difference to the lives of DKA members. As well as being chair of the Dutch Klinefelter Association, Alfred is a driving force behind the informal organisation Diversity of Sexual Development (DSD) Together/Intersex in the Netherlands, and is also an ambassador and member of the advisory board of the Chromodiversity Foundation, the foundation established by Elliot Polak (Elliot was interviewed on The I in Us in March 2025, the podcast of which can be heard here: The I in Us with Elliot Polak, 27 March 2025 | The I in Us). On this week’s episode of The I in Us Paul and Cody are delighted to welcome two of our most supportive and dedicated international listen-in-erers, Aces and Dakota Fox who set their alarms every week in Seattle, Washington, listen in live, and never miss a show. That’s right, this week intersex friend of the show Aces Fox returns to The I in Us, accompanied for the first time by Aces’ non-binary child Dakota. Yep, you heard it here first… on this episode we’ll have two Foxes in the House, well, the studio, which shouldn’t surprise anyone because not only is Aces a returning guest, Dakota is a child of an intersex parent, an artist, and a radio show host in their own right, on the first ever weekly US based FM K-pop radio show, a program that Aces produces. They’re quite the double act!! And well-balanced too. Oh, and as if all our stars weren’t already aligned, growing up, Aces was a training Olympic athlete, so we’ll also discuss the current IOC guideline change through the lens of Aces’ lived experiences as an intersex elite athlete. That’s a lot to unpack so be sure to tune in this Thursday April 2, 6-7pm Aust Daylight Savings time via JOY94.9, .au/player/index.html or iHeartRadio for what is guaranteed to be an interesting and thought-provoking show. You can also download JOY’s apps (and use the app to contact your hosts during the show) here: - Android: /store/apps/details?id=au.org.joy - iOS: /au/app/joy-94-9/id490949910 … subscribe to our podcasts here: .au/theiinus and contact your hosts with ideas and show suggestions here: [email protected] Catch you Thursday!!

It's estimated that ~1.7% of babies born in Australia have innate variations in sex characteristics, aka are #intersex. This is an umbrella term, encompassing a wide range of around 40 different variations. Variations in sex characteristics are not binary. They vary in the same way that our height, waistlines, and other physical attributes vary – in a spectrum and all completely normal. And that’s the thing. Being intersex is not a medical condition that needs to be fixed. On Science Queeries, I chat with the wonderful Paul Byrne-Moroney from @theiinus about how we can stop pathologising intersex people and start seeing these variations as just another part of human diversity. With the recent passing of the Health Safeguards for People Born with Variations in Sex Characteristics Bill 2025 (in Feb this year), Victoria is leading the way in protecting intersex kids from unnecessary, irreversible medical procedures. Tune in on @joy949 or wherever you listen to podcasts for a conversation about embracing what makes us all wonderfully unique! 💜💛

Recently, immediately off the back of returning from Australia’s inaugural intersex women and non-binary retreat, InterAction Training and Communications Coordinator Margie McCumstie undertook a whirlwind, ten-day trip to New York where she participated in multilateral meetings with Finland, UNICEF and the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) during Outright International's Advocacy Week. Margie also chaired the Australia and New Zealand Bilateral meeting. Margie also participated in off-site events associated with the Seventieth Session of the Commission on the Status of Women (CSW), which featured a session on the rights of intersex people, particularly women. CSW is the principal global intergovernmental body exclusively dedicated to the promotion of gender equality and the empowerment of women. Margie was invited by Outright International to attend this event, testament to the place Australia and InterAction for Health and Human Rights holds internationally in respect to intersex rights. Following the event Margie shared, “It was such an honour to participate in the first-ever intersex side-event inside the UN Headquarters in New York as part of 70th Commission on the Status of Women.” Please join Cody and Paul this Thursday when we welcome Margie back to Australia, and back to The I in Us to share a few of her experiences of the recent retreat, and this ground-breaking New York Conference – you won’t want to miss it! Please tune in this Thursday March 26, 6-7pm AEST via JOY94.9, .au/player/index.html or iHeartRadio for what is guaranteed to be a wonderful and informative show.

This week on The I in Us Paul and Cody are delighted to welcome Tony Briffa and Heather Corkhill to the show for a long-awaited discussion about the development and recent passing of the Victorian Government Intersex Protections Bill. By now Tony should be no stranger to our audience. For decades she has been at the forefront of intersex advocacy. She has appeared on several episodes of The I in Us to share her lived experience and years of advocacy, all of which has led up to the recent passing of the Government’s Intersex Protections Bill, which is the focus of this week’s show. Sitting through every hour of debate, Tony weathered the storm of opposing views and continued to lobby parliamentarians right up until history was finally made with the passing of the Bill, on 19 February. New to The I in Us, Heather Corkhill is a dedicated human rights and anti-discrimination law and policy specialist. With combined qualifications and experience in law, mediation and film production, Heather is committed to promoting equity, diversity, and human rights for LGBTIQ+ Australians, addressing systemic issues through practical and innovative solutions. In recent months Heather has played a pivotal role in the development of the Missing Voice report and continued the years-long contribution of Equality Australia to the development of the Victorian Government Intersex Protections Bill, working on the final stage immediately before the introduction of Bill to Parliament, and then supporting the passage of the Bill into law. Please tune in this Thursday March 19, 6-7pm AEST via JOY94.9, .au/player/index.html or iHeartRadio for what is guaranteed to be a wonderful show.
