This National Space Day, meet Aaron Russell, a Chartered Engineer, Director of Business Development UK at Network Innovations and the Chair of our Satellite Technical Network. Once told STEM was “probably a pipedream,” Aaron’s journey into space engineering was anything but straightforward. Today, Aaron volunteers to give others what he once needed: community, confidence and visibility. Feeling inspired? Read his journey via link in bio.

Happy 172nd birthday to pioneering engineer, scientist and suffragette Hertha Ayrton. 💡 Elected to the IEE (now the IET) in 1899, Ayrton broke barriers through her work on electric arc lights, her innovations during the First World War, and her tireless advocacy for women’s right to vote. We asked 2,000 people across the UK if they were switched on to electrical risks in their home, and it turns out confidence is doing a lot of the heavy lifting. While confidence is high in that respect, not many people are getting regular electrical checks, highlighting knowledge gaps and everyday habits that could accidentally raise the risk in millions of homes. We only captured a snapshot of habits here in the UK, so the real picture could be even bigger. 😱 But, the risk is real. Electricity is linked to around 19,300 accidental house fires every year in England, more than half of all accidental fires. Not sure what’s safe? Trust your instincts and call a competent electrician.

DIY confidence is growing, but electrics aren’t something to wing. We spoke to 2,000 adults across the UK about electrical safety at home and found that confidence doesn’t always match what’s actually happening behind the walls. And that’s just the people we surveyed. Knowing when it’s safe to do it yourself and when it’s time to get things checked can help keep you and your home safe. Love the confidence. Not the risk. Safer homes start with being switched on. Learn more via the link in bio.

“An installation could look pristine, nice chrome sockets, nice switches, but behind the scenes could be lurking some terrible connections. You just can’t tell by looking.” Just because an installation looks fine doesn’t mean it’s safe. With electricity now a leading cause of house fires in England, and many homes going years without being checked, risks can go unnoticed. From overloaded extension leads to hidden faults, it’s often the everyday things that cause the biggest problems. Listen to Craig O’Neill's full interview on BBC Radio 5 Live via the link in bio.

Happy Birthday to Sir William Siemens, a pioneering engineer, inventor and the IET’s very first President. At just 20 years old, he arrived in London with a single patent to sell and big ambitions, unaware his phenomenal work in electic lighting and telegraph communication would go on to help shape modern electrical engineering that we know today. We’re always looking for new ways to bring teams closer together. Some do trust falls, others do rope courses. We chose to walk over LEGO®. Why? Because pain is temporary, team bonding is forever. Only joking! We don't seriously make our team members walk over LEGO®. But we are serious about LEGO® Serious Play®. A creative, hands‑on way for teams to collaborate, think differently and solve problems together. We'll be offering this in‑company or at IET Stevenage: Futures Place. Link in bio. No foot suffering required.
