This is an important announcement for our customers in the United States. Due to ongoing tariff related issues with shipments to the United States, we will be temporarily suspending all new sales to be shipped to U.S. addresses until these tariffs are lifted. For more information please visit our website’s blog. This decision was not made lightly, and we look forward to the day that we can resume business with our clientele south of the border.

The birthstone for May - emerald! Part of the beryl family of minerals, emeralds are known for their vibrant green colour, caused by chromium and vanadium in their atomic structure. Natural emeralds commonly contain a significant amount of inclusions, sometimes referred to as “jardin” (French for garden). While inclusions usually and significantly decrease the value of more typically clear gemstones, inclusions in emeralds are common and well-accepted in the industry. Finding emeralds without visible inclusions can be very difficult, and these stones sell for very high premiums. To help mitigate the look of the inclusions, emeralds are almost always oil treated. This oil fills the inclusions/cracks in the emerald, improving its appearance. For this reason, emeralds cannot be cleaned in an ultrasonic bath, and one should avoid contact with solvents or detergents when wearing them to preserve the oil treatment. Additionally, due to the inclusions and emerald’s hardness of 7.5-8, care should be taken when wearing them, especially on a ring or bracelet. #birthstone #May #emerald #emeralds #thegemnerd

Closing out the month of April with the birthstone of the month, diamond! Originating from the Greek word “adamas” meaning unbreakable. Diamonds were first discovered in India, but have since been found in countries around the world, including Canada! With a hardness of 10 on the Moh’s scale, they’re the hardest known natural occurring substance and can only be scratched by another diamond. They are commonly known to be colourless, but actually come in a variety of colours. Yellow diamonds are caused by nitrogen present within the crystal, whereas boron causes the colour blue in natural diamonds. Green diamonds are caused by atomic “holes” aka vacancies in the crystal structure caused by exposure to radiation. Even more fascinating are pink to red diamonds, which are coloured by deformations in their crystal structure at the atomic level. This causes light to pass through the diamond differently, shifting the light into the red side of the spectrum. #April #birthstone #diamonds #labgrowndiamonds #thegemnerd

The birthstone for March - aquamarine! Aquamarine is a variety of beryl, which on its own is colourless. When certain elemental impurities form within the crystal at the atomic level, the colour can change to produce other varieties. These include morganite, emerald, and when iron is present, aquamarine. In ancient times, aquamarine was used as a protective stone for sailors, and the Romans believed that engraving a frog onto an aquamarine stone would turn enemies into friends. #gemology #birthstone #aquamarine #gemhistory #thegemnerd
