Here’s a clip of The Fretliners performing Hard Times Made Me live at the Wood Stove Chat, recorded right here at Kinney Farm in Lyons, Colorado where they played their very first show.
Tom Knowlton and Taylor Shuck are the real deal. In 2023 they swept both the Telluride Bluegrass Festival and RockyGrass Band competitions, an achievement only one other band has ever pulled off. But the full conversation is what got me.
We talked about recording in Nashville with T Bone Burnett at Studio A, the unexplained noise that showed up at the end of a take that the studio engineers chalked up to old Jack Clement still hanging around, and the story behind a song inspired by Tom’s grandmother who had a habit of saying grab down the old guitar and play us a song. We also got into playing on the back porch of Bill Monroe’s house, what it actually takes to win those competitions, and yes, somehow 3 eggs and a pickle came up.
