March sucked. Moomba left a lot to be desired and then I messed up my shoulder soon as I got home. Rest and rehab since, besides a small handful painful sets in the hope it’d got better. But the last couple of days have been more promising. Two weeks til the competitive season restarts. Let’s see. I bloody hate not skiing.

“Oh what a drag it is getting old”. When I last saw him two months ago, my coach, mentor and friend, Dimitri, was singing this, from a song by the Stones, as he told me of how he was sick of not being able to ride his road bike as he used to. But he said how at 83 he had lived 6 years longer than the life expectancy for a Greek man and how he had packed an incomparable amount more into his life than anyone else - “no one else did what I did, Fred, they couldn’t!”. He really laughed at that.
It’s a struggle to put across how influential he was in my life, suffice it to say no one outside of my family has been more so. I always saw him as a second father. A gruff, tough as nails old scoundrel with an utterly unique worldview and a heart of gold. From a young age he called me LEB - for Little English Boy - but just as often over the years he called me a little bastard, for not waking up for the good water in the morning (childhood), for being out late drinking (teens) and for “these long pulls, malaka!” (every year 1995-2026). He cared a lot, as everyone that knew him would know so well. Truly amongst the greatest, most interesting and wonderful people I’ve known. I’ll miss him terribly. RIP Piggy 🇬🇷❤️
Back in the old days when I was tough, skiing 12 straight English winters every weekend unless the lake was frozen, this used to be a nice April day for me. Since becoming a pathetic, soft Florida skier this last decade, this has become the outer limit of my virility. Still, way below freezing the last two nights and the kind of wind that’ll make you think twice. Least I stayed somewhat true to my roots today.

Strong argument for the start of the season being the most fun time to ski. No expectations, no tournament pressure, little bit of extra fat for momentum. I squeezed every bit of juice out of the off season but my god I’ve missed waterskiing
