Sound isn't just heard. It moves through you.
And postpartum — I've never been more aware of that than I am right now.
The tension in my shoulders before I've even registered I'm stressed. The way my jaw clenches when I'm running on too little sleep. The places that don't soften until sound moves through them and something I didn't know was tight finally releases.
My body knows things before my mind does.
That used to feel mysterious to me. Now I understand the mechanism.
Your body is approximately 60% water. Sound is vibration. And vibration moves through water completely — throughout the whole system.
Which means when a singing bowl resonates in the room around you, it doesn't stop at your eardrums. It travels through your tissue, your fascia, your fluid, your cells. Every part of you receives it.
Fascia — the connective tissue wrapping every muscle, organ, and bone — transmits vibration like a resonance chamber. So when you feel a bowl in your chest, or behind your eyes, or somewhere you can't quite name — that's not imagination. That's your body doing exactly what it's designed to do.
This is why sound can reach places that talk therapy and even bodywork sometimes can't.
It doesn't ask permission from the thinking mind. It doesn't require you to articulate what you're holding. It moves below the thinking, below the managing — and meets what's actually there.
That's why I still practice. Even in this season.

Honestly, I’m surprised I can even string multiple words together into a sentence right now.
You know that blank stare I used to give students that meant “please read where I left off” or “finish the thought for me”?
Yeah… now that stare is just me trying to complete the thought.
Teaching my first 50hr Sound Practitioner Training at 3.5 months postpartum, in Costa Rica, with my actual 3.5-month-old daughter, was the most humbling experience of my professional life—and honestly, my life in general.
I’ve never felt so prepared and unprepared.
So overwhelmed and in love.
So disorganized and deeply certain I was exactly where I was meant to be.
If “polar opposites” needed a visual, it was the nonstop stream of thoughts running through my brain that entire week.
And you know what?
I did it.
And you know what else?
I told my students I felt like I was underperforming.
Their response?
“Hell the fuck you’re not.”
So to all the moms who feel like they’re absolutely losing their minds on the inside, yet somehow still pulling miracles out of their ass like the boss bitch you are—I see you.

Early on, when someone cried in one of my sessions, I'd talk.
I'd say something. Fill the silence. Offer an explanation they didn't ask for. This is your body releasing. This is safe. This is your medicine (okay, I didn't use to say this last one, but I've heard it SO many times and it makes me cringe).
I was managing my own discomfort. Not holding theirs.
It took years to learn the difference.
To sit with someone mid-release and not flinch. Not reach for words. Not make their experience about my need to explain it.
To trust that the sound was doing exactly what it needed to do — and that my job was to stay steady, hold the space, and get out of the way.
That's not a passive skill. It's one of the hardest things to train.
Because silence feels risky when you're new. Tears feel like a sign you've done something wrong. The urge to narrate, to comfort, to fill — it's your human reflex, you must learn to override.
But the moment you start talking, you pull them back up to the surface.
And they were finally, finally going somewhere.
Six years in, I don't fill silence anymore.
I hold it. There's a difference.
The room gets big and I get quieter. Someone moves through something and I let it be theirs — fully, privately, without my commentary on top of it.
That's the work. The real work.
Not the instruments. Not the words.
The capacity to be present without needing to perform presence.
That skill? It's trained. It's practiced. It's what we build in October.

Relaxation is a skill. Your body doesn’t just automatically calm down.
And honestly? That makes total sense.
Hello constant notifications. Traffic. Emails. Endless to-do lists. What’s for dinner. Did I work out today. Why does my morning routine have 10 steps. My child is crying again.
We live in a relentless activation loop — and then expect our bodies to fully surrender just because we rolled out a yoga mat for 60 minutes or laid down for a sound healing.
Sorry babe. That’s not how this works.
When you spend the majority of your time in sympathetic nervous system overdrive, your body literally builds a chemical environment that makes it easy to stay stressed and hard to downshift. It’s not weakness. It’s neurochemistry.
So what do we do?
We practice.
We actually teach our bodies how to relax — so that over time, dropping into rest + digest becomes less of a battle and more of a reflex.
So the next time you’re lying in a sound bath still mentally composing a reply to that email you opened on the way in — you’re not failing. You’re training.
Give yourself some grace. This world is a lot. Your body is doing its best. And so are you.

That floaty feeling after a sound bath. The way time disappears. The tears that show up before your brain can explain them.
I used to finish a session and think: what just happened?
Not confused. Just… aware that something real was occurring that I didn't fully have language for yet.
So I went and got the language.
A Master's in Applied Health Physiology will do that to you. I needed to see the mechanism. The bridge between what people feel and what's actually happening in the brain and nervous system.
What I found: those moments of "release," of something shifting — they're not random. They're the brain moving out of beta. Out of survival mode. Into states where the body can finally soften, process, let go.
Not magic. But I understand why it feels like it is.

And suddenly this work stopped being something I just understood or facilitated for others — and became something I had to live inside of, daily, with a nervous system that was not going to settle just because I told it to.
No perfect setting. No uninterrupted practice. PPD that didn't care about my credentials.
The tools I teach are the reason I can show up at all right now.
Not perfectly. Regulated enough.
So when I talk about sound shifting the brain, it's not theory.
It's science. Practice. Something I'm living in real time.
And it's why I care so much about how this work gets done.

Short answer: No. You’re not bad at relaxing.
Here’s the science. (Pt. 1)
Your autonomic nervous system — the one running in the background 24/7 — operates in two states: 1. Activated. Go go go. High alert, high stress. 2. Rest. Digest. Repair. Slow down.
Most of us spend the majority of our lives wired into state 1.
So when you show up to a 60-minute sound healing and expect your body to just switch off? It can’t.
Not because you’re broken — but because your nervous system is doing exactly what it was trained to do.
Instead you’re lying there trying to will yourself into relaxation. Stop thinking. Why am I so tense? I’m supposed to be melting into the floor.
You can’t pray your way into a parasympathetic state. Your body is hardwired for alertness. That’s not a personal failing — it’s physiology.
The good news? Relaxation is a skill. And like any skill, it can be learned.
Your body can actually be taught how to rest.
