I haven’t yet shared all the ways summer healed me or how great the fall season has been at work yet but yesterday we celebrated my grandfather Tolik’s 80th birthday and I need to take a moment to shout out my family. My parents immigrated from Odessa, Ukraine in 1993—my grandparents soon followed because they just couldn’t be without their kids. Grandpa Tolik made a life in Odessa he was happy with but was willing to start over for all of us in NY. He ran many businesses of which my favorite was his pizza bar (many friends can attest to how awesome it was to know a guy who treated us to whatever we wanted when we came by). His generosity knows no bounds, his ferocious humor and wit outshine any stand up comic and the kindness he’s shown friends and family over the years was attested to by a dinner table filled with Odessians—childhood friends who came to the states at the same time. 70+ years of friendship later, they flew in from all over the country to celebrate him. Toasts overflowed (I stopped counting after the 20th). My mom wrote her first poem ever for him…but my favorite part of the night—watching my grandparents and parents dance. If you wonder where I get it from—it’s them. It is our shared love language.

March 21 - An embodied Shabbat experience like no other. 🌙 Move. Dance. Rest.
🌀 We begin with a guided movement warm-up led by @thedancingagent to drop into the body.
🔥 Then, we dive into an ecstatic dance by @lawrenceinmotion , a freeform journey into rhythm and expression.
🌊 Finally, we close with deep rest, integrating the experience and stepping into Shabbat with presence.
This isn’t just a dance—it’s a ritual, a release, a return to yourself.

Movement has always been the access point to something beyond my physical self. The quiet place that is just being. In this pocket I don’t need or want a thing—I am free. Maybe it’s a feeling of connectedness and oneness with all, maybe it’s flow or, dare I say, God. The truth of this freedom can only be known through the experience of it. We all have access to this any time we want it.
So what is a sabbath ecstatic dance? It is a sacred space in time to reconnect with ourselves, community and that which is beyond ourselves. We take the time to shift from ‘doing’ into ‘being’.
If you already know or have no clue and are curious, join us tomorrow night. I will be leading the embodied warm up, @poetlawrence hosts and DJ’s and after @malkahenna will take us through a sound journey.
