👀 Accessibility and inclusion are not the same thing. A building can have ramps, elevators, and accessible washrooms while disabled people are still excluded from meaningful participation in employment, education, leadership, policy decisions, social spaces, and community life. Accessibility removes barriers. Inclusion changes who is genuinely able to belong, contribute, influence, and participate with dignity. That distinction matters because systems sometimes focus on visible accessibility measures while leaving deeper structural exclusion untouched. My first and only “real” job has been at @accessiblemediainc . When I first joined, we made original content specifically for the blind and partially sighted community of Canada. As mandates changed and all Canadian broadcasters became legally required to make their content accessible, it changed our niche quite a bit. But we diversified, and now we premiere shows that showcase a variety of disabilities. As much as I miss being on TV, the shows that now air on AMI are (in my opinion) genuinely great television beyond just disability representation. @thecriptrip is proof of that! AMI has been so supportive of me and my pursuit of content creation. When I was asked to help promote Crip Trip, I was so excited. It’s also given me the chance to work a little with my friend Rebecca, who is one of the producers of the show. I didn’t realize how much of an impact Rebecca had on my work ethic until recently. I remember one day years ago, during a team meeting at the office, I had something to say every two seconds, and she said to me (in the kindest way possible), “Beth, you need to let other people talk. Your thought will still be there when they’re done.” If you know me, you know I need that kind of guidance. 😂 At the beginning, I was so unsure of myself, but Rebecca’s confidence was contagious and thank goodness for that.
