Broadway, Milwaukee WI In a seedy Oklahoma City motel room, a divorced waitress named Agnes and a soft-spoken Gulf War drifter named Peter are brought together by Agnes' friend R.C. Agnes has her reasons for holing up in a place like this, and Peter seems to understand the appeal of staying off the grid. Time is running out. Thank you @ryanjayreviews for your thoughtful and wonderful review. Two shows left. Nominated for 4 Tony Awards this year, “BUG” by Tracy Letts is currently wowing in Milwaukee. The production, now playing through May 9 at the Broadway Theatre Center, continues The Constructivists commitment to bringing dark catharsis content to local audiences. There is no other company consistently producing this type of material: provocative, unsettling and impactful. What makes “BUG” such a standout this season is the artistry both on stage and off. Directed by Maya Danks with razor-sharp precision, the show fully leans into its claustrophobic tension. Set in a motel room, conspiracy theory prays upon the characters' loneliness and fear, turning into obsession. But what makes the writing so brilliant is the way it stays with you; leaving the theater mulling over different ways to view what’s true, what might not be, and what you have to leave up for debate. The Constructivists founder and artistic director, Jaimelyn Gray is electrifying as Agnes. What begins as a codependent drug addict turns into a character study peppered with nuance. Her act 2 monologue features a breakdown that is a masterclass in breath work. As her ex-con-ex-boyfriend, Goss, Matt Specht loses all traces of himself. His portrayal of the bully is transformational, a true exhibition of the artist’s range as an actor. Joe Lino’s Peter oscillates between innocence and conviction, creating an unpredictability alongside Gray’s Agnes, which is thrilling to watch. Viewers are constantly kept off balance. What makes “BUG” effective is how it weaponizes ambiguity. Is this a story about conspiracy, mental illness, addiction, trauma, or something more in the subtext? There is no cookie cutter answer - and that is what makes it so fun to see. Only a couple performances left. Affordable tickets available at The Constructivists. for those tix.
