Let’s talk about consciousness.
(We know it’s not what we usually post about, but bear with us.)
Consciousness was the main theme of an image we worked on with Giovanni Croce vel @tauma_artist For the past few months it occupied a large portion of our heads. So let us share some of our findings. (And shed more light on this secret piece.)
Because consciousness is a really fascinating topic. Just think about it:
👉 how would you describe it?
Is it something you have? Or is it something that happens to you? Where does it come from? And how can you even know you are conscious?
Those questions are more difficult than they seem. We sure don’t know how to answer them. And it’s not just us. Scientists formulated over 100 different definitions of consciousness. They all make sense but at the same time, they all contradict each other. Take those ideas for example:
🔸 Some say consciousness comes from processes in the brain. That mind and matter are a whole, so awareness cannot be transferred to anything other that biological body.
🔸 Others state that if a system is complex enough, it may develop consciousness. Because it doesn’t matter what you are made of, but what you do.
🔸 Or even that there is no mysterious inner essence. And consciousness is just a cognitive trick our mind plays on itself.
So, what do you think? Which one of the above is most true?
We tried to explore this question with art. The images you see in this post are parts of an art piece we created, representing different takes on consciousness.
If you’re curious to learn more about it, stay tuned. We’re working on a video and an article to show more details of the creative process and meaning behind this image. We’ll be sharing them here soon.
PS.
The artpiece will also be exhibited at the CONTINUUM Exhibition in Florence on May 15th in The Social Hub Lavagnini. So definitely come by if you’re around.
Which of those 3 lighting scenarios fits this image the best?
1️⃣ A sunny day, when hotel guests enjoy breakfast or sunbathe by the swimming pool.
2️⃣ A sunset, with people having a late lunch or relaxing after a long day of sightseeing.
3️⃣ A nighttime, when guests share a romantic dinner or gaze at the stars.
Bare in mind, there are the same people in all those three images. They wear exactly the same clothes. and have all the same poses.
But just because we switched from day to night, it all looks and feels completely different.
So which mood in your opinion is the best for this image?
Type 1, 2 or 3 in the comments and let us know which story is your favourite.

Our piece will be exhibited at the CONTINUUM Exhibition in Florence!
We’ve been working on this project in secret for the past few months, together with Giovanni Croce aka @tauma_artist Now it’s finally ready to step out into the world.
This project is our attempt on answering a question that intrigued us for a long time:
What is consciousness?
We used art to try and explore this topic. Here’s just a tiny glimpse of it. In this clip you can see robots explaining how they “understand” consciousness.
Stay tuned for more soon.
And come see our piece in the gallery if you’re around.

Here’s another glimpse of @soda.festival in Sorrento.
(Plus some compromising photos of Bart 😁)
Hands down, it was one of the best events we attended.
Speaking from the theatre stage was a fantastic experience! Digital Art battle was so much fun (right, Bart?) And the vibe of the community, as always, top notch.
Once again, huge congratulations and thanks to @fabiopalvelli and @mattvenanzio for putting it all together. Can’t wait for next year’s edition.
PS.
In our presentation we finally got a chance to speak about our secret project. We’ve been working on for the last few months. We’ll share more about it in following weeks. So stay tuned!

On May 15, CONTINUUM opens.
An exhibition that invites reflection on the relationship between digital and classical art. A thin line that both separates and connects human and machine.
A fluid connection in which human thought, computational systems, and visual imagination interact in new and unexpected ways.
The works emerge from a digital material layering: a mixed technique combining 3D, 2D, and AI.
Alongside the artworks by TAUMA, a piece crafted with “The Common Point” will be presented to the public for the first time inviting us to reflect on a very specific meaning of “consciousness.”

Close-ups. Everybody loves them.
But do your clients actually ask for them?
For us, 3d artists, close-ups are one of our favourite shots. They build that studio photoshoot look. And showcase textures we worked so hard to create. Plus, they're fun (and easy) to do.
But have you ever had a client ask for a close-up? Is that something you propose when discussing the scope of work?
And if you do include close-ups in a set, do you charge for them? Or do you add them as an extra cherry on top?
Do you have your personal formula for keeping a good balance?
Share your thoughts in the comments.

This is a project we started, but never finished.
Instead, we let other people play with the assets from it.
This was the D2 Lost&Found Challenge back in 2024. We shared the models with the 3d community. And challenged them to get creative.
Our idea for the assets was something with a sci-fi vibe. And we were curious if people will see something different in them.
The artists did not disappoint!
We were blown away. There were dark fantasy worlds, colorful gardens and underwater scenes. Out of 140+ images and animations, we’ve selected five entries we loved the most, created by:
Vlad Kalinovych @bildform.at
Davide Poggio @dapoggio
Alessandro Colace @alessandro__colace
Lisa Della Dora @lisadelladora
Brandon Cheng @brandoncheng_
You can see them in this post. 👉 But if you want to see other entries too. we’ve also put together a tribute page with many more submissions:

Take a look and tell us in the comments, which one is your favourite.
The @soda.festival is officially in the books!
And we are blown away.
Great line-up, great vibe, great execution. The venue in Tasso Theatre was extraordinary! Congratulations to @fabiopalvelli and @mattvenanzio for putting this all together.
And thanks for a inviting us to give a speech. Have to say, being on theatre stage was really something else.
The topic of our presentation was a secret project. (We’ve been cooking it with @giovannibcroce for few months. More on it soon). We tried to challenge people’s idea of what it means to do art in the AI era.
Actually, the artistic process was kind of a theme across all the presentations:
What makes our works unique? How to find something valuable in an AI-powered process? And how not to lose our humanity in all that mess?
But it was not all that serious.
There was also this crazy event called Digital Battle. We both hosted and participated in it. Art did the live commentary, while Bart competed with legendary @thedizzyviper .
The gist of it was this: Bart and Dizzy had an hour to create an image. But they also had to drink shots every six minutes. And could sabotage each other (for example changing the other guy’s resolution or mouse speed settings.)
Yes. Watching other artists get totally humiliated is a pinnacle of guilty pleasure. 😁
And after lectures, we conquered Sorrento.
The city was perfect for the event. Not just for the food and limoncello. 😉 Because of its scale, you could really feel this conference continued on the streets. Every time you turn a corner, or go to a bar, you meet someone from SODA. It was all like a big Italian wedding. And since all the Italians were in Sorrento, we’re pretty sure not even a single render was done in the whole country during that weekend.
We had so much fun, learned a ton and got back bursting with inspiration.
It was 12 out of 10.
Definitely doing it again next year.
🎤 Speaker Announcement
Meet @thecommonpoint
Artur Tamioła and Bartosz Domiczek return to WVF with a story shaped by contrast, curiosity, and collaboration.
Artur is the more outspoken half of the duo, driven by endless questions and a background that spans design, animation, coding, and storytelling. His creative path is anything but linear, and that’s exactly what gives him a unique perspective on how ideas come together.
Bartosz, originally trained as an architect, spent nearly a decade working independently across the CG industry. It wasn’t until he joined forces with Artur that his approach shifted, opening up a more collaborative and exploratory way of thinking that now defines their work.
Together, they created The CommonPoint as a space for those who want to go beyond surface-level learning. Their work connects technology with visual sensitivity and helps artists develop not just skills, but a way of seeing.
At WVF 2026, they will share how different paths, creative tension, and constant questioning can lead to deeper, more intentional visual storytelling.
✨ Expect honesty
💡 Expect curiosity
🎓 Expect a fresh perspective

We broke this image on purpose.
Why? We just wanted to see how far we could push bad decisions before it stopped working.
Swipe through the images in this post to see how things fall apart with each poor decision we make, like:
→ making all the trees in the background the same height (it looks fake);
→ choosing underwhelming architecture that is out of scale (boooring!);
→ putting all the monks cramped in one place;
→ adding no secondary lighting (image has no depth).
Single mistake wouldn't totally break your image. But combined?
Oh, boy.
If we made all those mistakes at once, we’d end up with a sad and boring image.
So learn from our mistakes and try to make better decisions than we did.
And if you’d like to learn more about this topic, there’s an episode of 3D+AI Sandbox exploring it in depth. Check it out on our YouTube channel.
