Meet the artist behind "Undercurrents," a new site-specific art installation coming to the Cistern on April 24.
Rafael Lozano-Hemmer (b.1967, Mexico City) is an internationally acclaimed multimedia artist known for transforming public spaces into interactive, participatory experiences. Blending light, sound, and technology, his work invites audiences to become part of the artwork itself.
For "Undercurrents", Lozano-Hemmer brings his signature approach to the Buffalo Bayou Park Cistern—exploring the invisible systems that shape how we communicate and connect.

Earlier works by @lozanohemmer —like 'Less than Three'—use intercom networks and responsive systems to translate voices into light, sound, and shared space. These precedents reveal the building blocks of communication and presence that inform the new artwork, offering a preview without giving it away. For 'Less than Three' and 'Undercurrents,' the installations are only complete with the help of the visitor whose voice and participation brings them to life.

Original works by Houston poets shape this immersive installation—language becomes sound, moving in sync with pulses of light across a mile-long network of LED lines. Their words echo through the space, creating a reflective experience rooted in rhythm, memory, and voice.
Original works by Houston poets Nick Flynn, Aris Kian Brown, Martha Serpas, Jennifer Teets, and Roberto Tejada will shape this reflective soundscape, paired with the voices of visitors.
