Santeria became one of the defining songs of the late ’90s, but the story behind it is way deeper than some people realize.
The song was released in 1997 on Sublime’s self-titled album after frontman Bradley Nowell had already passed away just two months before the album dropped. What sounds like a laid-back summer anthem became a bittersweet farewell record.
After Bradley’s passing, Santeria pushed Sublime into mainstream success and cemented them as one of the defining alternative bands of the era. At the time, the band stood out for blending ska, punk, reggae, hip-hop, and Southern California culture into something that felt completely different from polished late ’90s radio. Nearly three decades later, the song still captures a specific feeling and time in music that people continue coming back to. Can you remember the first time your heard it?
