My name is Ruth, and I’m a Braiding Coach and Braid Stylist. I think it’s about time I shared how I got into hair braiding as a career! Here is little bit of my story ✨ When I was 14, my mum took me to a local African salon for work experience. Let’s just say it was interesting—but it was also where I learned how to professionally braid for the first time. After that, I ended up managing the salon while the owner was away for long periods. She trusted me to braid her clients, which gave me the confidence to really step into my skills. From there, I started braiding my own hair, then moved on to family and friends. I was charging £25–30 for braids, and honestly, I was so happy! None of my friends had jobs at 14, so I felt like I was doing alright for myself. By the time I was getting ready for university, I decided to take braiding seriously. I knew I didn’t want a retail job or to work for anyone else while I was studying. So, when I got to uni, I made sure everyone knew I did braids. I became known as the university hair braider, which I loved because I got to make so many friends while learning the basics of running a business. After graduating, I took the biggest risk of my life: I went full-time with my braiding business. By then, I was in such high demand that I believed I could make it work. I worked DAY AND NIGHT from my tiny bedroom (😂), and eventually, I saved enough money to open my own salon. At 23 years old, I had my very first braiding salon! Four years later, here I am, running my salon and having braided hundreds of clients. Now, I’m sharing everything I’ve learned with anyone who wants to follow in my footsteps. Recently completed a 1:1 training with @sophiasestanovich focused on TV and film hair 🎬 We covered essential hairdressing for on set work, and it gave me a deeper understanding of what’s required within TV and film environments. Coming from a braiding background, I’ve been intentional about expanding my skill set beyond braiding as I continue building within on set, fashion and commercial work. Inspired by my time last year working as a braid specialist under @jennyrhodesmclean , I’m focused on continuing to develop and refine my skills within this space.
