A very moving evening as Fleet Street’s greatest, both past and present, gathered to pay tribute to photojournalist Brian Harris. Brian was due to speak about his life’s work himself tonight, at ‘Assignments LIVE: An evening with Brian Harris’ at the Bridewell Theatre off Fleet Street. Sadly the cancer he was receiving end of life care for as he prepared for the talk, caught up with him. The event went ahead in his memory, presented by friends and colleagues, with some very moving tributes. You would have loved the chit chat over drinks afterwards Brian. We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of photographer Brian Harris.
Brian was a founding member of The Press Photographers’ Association, which became The British Press Photographers’ Association, when its first meeting was held in a pub off Fleet Street in 1984. He was the youngest staff photographer at The Times when he was just 24 and went on to be the first staff photographer when The Independent launched in 1986. During his 55 year career he covered the famine in Ethiopia, the civil war in Rhodesia, the aftermath of the Falklands war and the fall of the Berlin Wall which was documented in his book “…and then the Prime Minister hit me”, published in 2016.
Brian was due to speak about his life’s work at ‘Assignments LIVE: An evening with Brian Harris’ on Wednesday 8th October. The event will go ahead in his memory and be presented by friends and colleagues, we look forward to raising a glass to him in the bar afterwards.
Brian passed away peacefully surrounded by his family at home in Thaxted on Saturday 4th October at the age of 73 after a short battle with cancer. Our thoughts and condolences are with his family and friends at this sad time.

Following the success of Assignments 2023 at The Bargehouse on London’s Southbank we are delighted to have relocated the exhibition to Cardiff’s Ffotogallery.
This is the first time we have run the exhibition in Wales and were really pleased to host a well attended opening event and talk by south Wales freelance photographer Joann Randles. Joann talked about her move from the world of film and television production to stills photographer and how she has used and adapted her tv skills into photojournalism.
A large group of Welsh based photographers and guests attended the event and we’re really pleased to say that the exhibition will now run Wednesday to Saturday until July 22nd.
We will host two further talks and are excited to announce that Reuters photographer, and current The BPPA Press Photographer of the Year, Hannah McKay will be our next guest. Hannah will be appearing on Wednesday 28th June in conversation with our chair Paul Ellis discussing her award winning career and showing some of the wonderful work that she has produced over the years.
