The 4×6 love glossies from her Texas trips replete with alabasterd skin and devil eyes. Hartley and Liam were mellow as hell toddlers. Hartley went through a couple of months of not speaking to informed complete sentences. Liam was born with an Italian opera star's hair and an answer to every argument. As reckless toddlers, we went to every kid flic coming down the pike. On one matinee drive away, I asked after a long quiet beat what they thought of 'Alpha and Omega' this wolf animated feature we'd just seen. Origin story. During the tail end of the loneliest lockdown circa Aug 2021 it was understood I was getting a dog. My mum and shrink at the time agreed. A goodly amount of my Tex x's thought it was a logical next move; Get a dog. He was the very first dog pictured on the rescue website. His name was Barcley and his fur was dubbed 'butterscotch'. Went down to the shelter with a gal pal to look reputable and adoption worthy. Evidently folk had phoned and emailed inquiring about him but NO ONE had physically made the trek. Nobody was really driving regularly yet. I was delivering mostly COVID meds for HEB at the time. I wasn't a first responder, front liner or super spreader, I was full tilt boogie in enemy territory daily. Every hotel and inn along I-35 was a quarantine brimming with hospital and assisted living infected overflow. Cops would check me before I dropped off goodness at the impromptu concierge nurse station.
So. He's not at the pound. He had the kennel cough and was driving all the other critters and staff bananas. Next stop was Ms. Mary the puppy whisperer. She was good with sick rogue yappers I'm gathering. We head to her house and are greeted by a tiny tiny woman and three tiny tiny hacking balls of hair. The shelter gave me meds for his cough and the tiny tiny woman dropped some knowledge: "Sit on the ground and see if he comes to you". After a beat, he did. He then jumped waist high and bit me on the ass as I stood up to put him in his dog caddy. Quite a feat, I was heart hooked.
