Saying goodbye isn’t easy, especially to the ones you love. To say that we’ve loved the past six years as the Aviary would be an understatement. We have so many people to thank including our families, our friends, friends of friends, our members, and the design industry professionals that routinely serviced the creative community here.
Thanks to our neighbors on this amazing street, to the company that always created our window vinyls in a heartbeat, and our window washer, who came every Tuesday for six years.
Special thanks to all those who helped us manage the space - your patience, great ideas and hard work is much appreciated.
This past year has been difficult for sure, but we feel it’s time to move on. We have watched our entire community build amazing lives and businesses and we’re so proud of each and every one of you. Today Jorge and his family dropped by and left notes (and doodles) on our front window. Jorge is one of the individuals who came as one and left as a team. He’s also now a father of three! All of our families grew here together. ♥️ @ordinaryfolkco we will miss you all xo.

~ FINAL DAYS ~ The Aviary started out with three clear objectives
•create a shared open studio
•make it beautiful
•locate it at street level
The idea of creating a coworking space specifically designed for Architects, Designers, and Creatives was new in Vancouver in 2015. Locating it at street level, embedded in a largely residential neighbourhood, was also new. Architects like to create spaces; better yet, space for creative work and inspiration. With this conviction, Andrea and Stella took a leap of faith and opened The Aviary in January 2016.
Approaching the design of the space was intentionally simple; every element served a functional purpose. Humble off-the-shelf materials were used in beautiful and purposeful ways; reflecting Stella and Andrea’s design philosophies where they value the smart use of common materials like plywood, felt, cork, and the now infamous white peg board that served as storefront backdrop, space divider, light filter, storage and flexible playful display. And the plants. What would an Aviary be without plants? The Bird of Paradise, became synonymous with The Aviary’s identity.
While all of this was an exciting creative pursuit for Stella and Andrea, who met at UBC’s School of Architecture, opening the doors and warmly welcoming each new member into a creative family, is their true legacy. While working on their own creative businesses, and raising families, they nurtured each individual who came into the studio. Countless friendships were forged in this space, a few relationships too! Many came in as sole proprietors, and left as established businesses, literally fledging the nest.
They are extremely proud to have fostered this community with a common appreciation for design, and common struggles as creative entrepreneurs. It is not easy to walk away from something this meaningful, however, Andrea and Stella are focusing on their busy architecture careers, and their kids, who have grown up here.

A meeting between Art + Interior Design, Circling Back is a space that explores design as it relates to our past, present, and future through the commonality of the human rhythm.
“Our daily routines, and how we occupy space, are often perceived as a linear state of time. What if, we moved that notion aside to develop a curiosity for the journey into how we live our lives.”

She has been living in Strathcona with her husband and two children since 2014. You may have caught their installation in our storefront during Vancouver Design Week a few years back.
