Our first EP, ‘Keeper Of Joy,’ is out now. Long live The Anti Citizens.
The “Keeper Of Joy” was an inside joke Rob and I made up during COVID whenever a seemingly world-ending event occurred. Whenever a new nuclear pact was signed or a state building was stormed by neo nazis, we would say “The Keeper is knocking.” It was definitely a coping mechanism. There’s more to it, but if you want the lore drop, check out our website theanticitizens.com that I spent a month making.
These songs were written when I was 14-17, a time where I had very little hope not only for the world but for myself. Everyone has their own response to nihilism, to their own Keeper of Joys, and music was mine. It was my way of extending my voice as a victim in an environment that would rather laugh off vulnerability. That is the motto of The Anti Citizens – to encourage those who feel voiceless to be loud and disruptive.
I’ve been living in Nepal for the past couple weeks, and just recently 20 students and children were shot dead by the police for protesting against their government’s corruption and institutional nepotism. The next day, the entire city was up in flames, with chants of empowerment coming from both the youth and other marginalized communities. Last week, the first woman Prime Minister was elected to an interim government through a Discord call. Even in the face of death, many refused to be voiceless.
This EP is dedicated to the Nepali youth and to the hope that we can all save ourselves. I will be playing these songs in Kathmandu, and we will be playing them after we all get back together. We can never stop shouting, we can never stop singing, we can never stop playing. We are just getting started.
