Here are some interesting facts to learn about Black dancers who changed the stereotypes in the dance industry. 💃🏾
Among the first pioneers who shaped the African American dance culture are: Josephine Baker, Pearl Primus, Katherine Dunham, The Nicolas Brothers, Janet Collins, John Bubbles, and Alvin Ailey.
🔸 Josephine Baker, one of the first black women to leave her mark on the dance world and whose name is associated with sensuality, bravery and uninhibited passion, fought segregation through the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP).
🔹 John Bubbles and Ziegfeld Follies became the first black artists to perform in New York’s acclaimed Radio City Music Hall.
🔸 Katherine Dunham, another remarkable woman of African American dance, was one of the first modern dance pioneers in her own right, combining cultural, grounded dance movements with elements of ballet.
🔹 The Nicolas Brothers had unique careers as tap and “flash” dancers and have received Kennedy Center Honors.

This month NPAFE team members in Washington DC reached out to Betty Weinberger @bettymweinberger to learn more about her significant role in the New York City dance community and to introduce NPAFE services to her.
Weinberger is a powerful choreographer, compelling performer and actor, and a devoted teaching assistant, currently an associate choreographer for the Broadway show SiX: The Musical. Her focus for future works is centered on producing more shows and presenting series about real stories told through movements and dance.
