Introducing: SAYURI ICHIDA
The Photographers' Gallery is delighted to announce representation of Sayuri Ichida (@the_final_view )! We are very excited to welcome her to the Print Sales Gallery roster and look forward to showcasing a selection of her limited edition prints at @photolondonfair next week, alongside works by @saidou_dicko and @michaelkennaphoto . Find us at the fair 13 – 17 May on booth C04!
Sayuri Ichida (b. 1985, Japan) is a UK-based photographer whose practice focuses on themes of self-identity, reflecting on her own memories and life experiences. In her photographs, she explores the complexities of emotional states by portraying the human form and sculptural objects. Working across portraiture and landscape, Ichida creates quiet, atmospheric images in which the human figure appears alongside natural and sculptural forms.

5 days left to see the Jerwood Awards exhibition at @barnsleycivic !
I had the pleasure of interviewing the lovley @the_final_view about her exhibition currently at the Barnsley Civic. Sayuri’s exhibition explores the depopulation issue in Japan. Currently schools are being shut down with some being converted into homes for the elderly. The exhibition remembers shut down schools through photographs displayed on chalkboards with the details of the schools written on the back with chalk. A really interesting concept worth seeing in person.
Thank you for your time @the_final_view

空席 (Kūseki) #006
Commissioned for the Jerwood/Photoworks Awards 5, I created photo collages for the first time. Kūseki reflects on Japan’s ongoing depopulation, particularly in rural areas. I visited more than 30 closed school buildings across Niigata Prefecture, where I grew up — and this was the very first school I photographed.
I travelled to Japan last March, when snow was still piled high across the landscape. The school sits in a deeply remote, forested area. While I was there, I didn’t see a single person.
At its peak in 1972, the school had 103 students. It closed in 2015 with just eight. Many other schools experienced even steeper declines.
For the exhibition, the main works are collage images screen-printed onto chalkboards. I chose to include one physical collage to reveal the materiality and fragmentation behind the process.
Currently on view alongside TRA by @butchfemmelove at @barnsleycivic as part of @barnsleyfotocollective . After Barnsley, the exhibition will travel on to @ffotogallery (Cardiff) and (Glasgow).
