Welcoming cook, writer and content strategist, Gemma Plunkett, as our latest creative in residence at The Second.
“Cressida Campbell’s book was on the table when I arrived. I had to read it. She’s one of my favourite artists. She gets it, you know – the importance of enjoying and taking note of the everyday, the simple, the special and the mundane. The dishes, the lights, the dining table. All of it.”
Our Creative Residency brings together a community of creatives and thinkers across a variety of disciplines and practices. Each private residency is an invitation to pause, observe and respond to an evolving dialogue between place, practice and people.

_____Scenes from The Second – a curated stay and creative residency in Sydney’s Surry Hills neighbourhood. Occupying the entire second floor of the heritage Edwards & Co Ltd building, the space blends architecture, art and design, delivering an inspiring place to stay, create and gather.
Both a premium short stay and a platform for established and emerging creatives, The Second is home to vintage and contemporary designs. Within the walls you’ll find works by both Australian and international designers and artists, including Tom Fereday, Jorna Newberry, Chen Ping and Louise Roe, alongside a considered curation from Studio Gardner.

Welcoming NYC creative Jasmine Kennedy to The Second, for a moment of reflection, creativity and discovery.
“From the feel of the original hardwood flooring underfoot to the cozy corners that remain connected to the rest of the space through light and sound, the thoughtfulness behind the aerie’s architecture and interiors has stuck with me. At The Second, I was able to slow down and reset, which opened up space for creative inspiration to flourish.”
The Creative Residency brings together a community of creatives and thinkers, spanning disciplines and perspectives. Each residency invites a creative to inhabit the space for a short stay – to live within it’s walls and respond to an evolving dialogue between place, practice and people.

‘While creating within the space, we came to realise our best work is made with a vision, yet no rigid plan: thus the beauty of trusting the process. We worked in complete flow with one another, allowing our environment to take the lead, anchoring us with a newfound level of faith in ourselves, and our craft.
Being in residence at The Second has felt like a pivotal moment. Our presence here, in such striking surrounds, has held a rare duality: a profound stillness, while igniting even greater ambition. With The Second as our canvas, our muse, and our home for the past three days, we leave with restored energy, renewed conviction, and an extended community to help carry us.’
