The messages we’ve received over the past few days have meant more than we can put into words. The support, understanding, and encouragement from this community has been overwhelming. It’s in moments like these that we’re reminded what #TheUltimateRace really is. Hearing what this event means to each of you — the commitment, the build-up, the personal reasons behind why you show up — stays with us.
Every early morning.
Every late ride.
Every hour and every kilometre of training over months on end. It doesn’t go unnoticed. We see the work. We understand what it takes. Thank you for your dedication — to the sport, to #TheUltimateRace, and to Dryland.
It means more than you know.
With 10 days to go until the 2026 36ONE MTB Challenge, and after an incredibly difficult week of route inspections, consultations and continuous engagement with authorities and stakeholders, we regret to confirm that the event, scheduled for 22 May 2026, has officially been cancelled.
Despite exploring every possible rerouting option, we could not present a route that met the safety standards and integrity that define The 36ONE. Rather than deliver a shortened and compromised version of the race, we have chosen to protect the spirit of the event — and most importantly, the safety of our riders, crews, volunteers and emergency teams.
Thank you for your understanding and continued support during this difficult time.
All entered riders will be offered a transfer to 2027 or a refund.
Further administrative communication regarding these processes will follow directly to participants.

IMPORTANT 36ONE MTB CHALLENGE EVENT UPDATE
After a long and dry summer across the Klein Karoo, we are deeply grateful for the widespread rain that fell across the region this week. While the rainfall brought much-needed relief to farmers, dams and landscapes throughout the area, it also resulted in severe flooding and infrastructure damage in certain areas.
Significant damage was caused to a number of public gravel roads across the 36ONE route network between Oudtshoorn, Dysselsdorp, Louvain, Rooiberg, Calitzdorp and the Swartberg area.
At this stage, water levels in certain areas have still not fully subsided and we are continuing to assess the extent of the damage together with local authorities and landowners. It is already clear that route changes will likely be necessary, but no final decisions can yet be made until full access and inspections are possible over the weekend and early next week.
For now, the event is still going ahead, although adjustments to the route should be expected.
We understand the uncertainty and appreciate everyone’s patience and support while we work through a situation completely beyond our control. Rider safety and the overall event experience remain our top priorities.
A further update will be communicated early next week once assessments have been completed and we have a clearer picture of the way forward.

Why do you participate in #TheUltimateRace?
"The Best Single-Stage Race in South Africa!
I had heard that the 360 MTB Challenge is rated as the best single-stage race in South Africa, and after experiencing it myself, I can confirm—it truly lives up to the hype. There was absolutely no disappointment; this race is in a league of its own.
One of the highlights was meeting strangers who quickly became friends. The sense of community and camaraderie out on the route was something special. I would highly recommend this race to anyone looking for a real challenge and a memorable adventure.
Make no mistake—you do need to train for this. But if you put in the work, your training will carry you through. And beyond the physical effort, you'll have an incredible time.
And don't forget to look up—the night skies during the event are absolutely breathtaking. An unforgettable experience all around. " - Nic Rossouw
