The song was written by James Hetfield around 1990 while he was on tour. At that time, he was talking to his girlfriend on the phone and absentmindedly playing guitar with one hand. The open-string melody that became the iconic intro came from that exact moment — because one hand was busy holding the phone.
Originally, Hetfield never even wanted the song to be released. He thought it was “too personal” and not really a Metallica-style track. The lyrics were about vulnerability, trust, emotional connection, and being isolated from the world while constantly touring. Unlike many Metallica songs filled with aggression, war, anger, or social themes, this one came directly from his inner emotions.
