I recently launched my first visual essay with @the.pudding . It brings together so many of my recent interests — research, coding, design, and sewing — on a topic that won’t leave me alone: the chaos of women’s clothing sizes. For years, it really bothered me that women were expected to learn each clothing brand’s unique sizing system through a rough combination of dressing room meltdowns and trial-and-error. So I gave up and learned how to sew. Learning how to make my own clothes completely recontextualized everything I’d known about sizes and shopping. Finally I had raw measurements to truly understand why my clothes didn’t fit right. And that it wasn’t my fault. I’m sharing what I’ve learned after diving into data from the U.S. National Center for Health Statistics and ASTM International sizing guidelines to offer a better understanding of which sizes the typical median American actually wears. From there we chart the body measurements found within the size charts of popular clothing brands and compare those figures to real-world bodies. The results, as many have likely experienced first-hand, highlight a sizing system that is largely outdated and ill-equipped to serve even the average American woman. Few life experiences feel as universal, across generations, as the pains and frustrations of trying to find clothes that fit. Sizes vary wildly from store to store. Even within a single apparel company, no one size is consistent. There are no regulations or universal sizing standards. Instead each brand is incentivized to make up its own. When size guides change — and they’re always changing — brands are not obligated to disclose updates. The only consistent feature is that the industry at large continues to cling onto the same underlying sizing system that’s been broken for decades. And it’s only gotten worse. @diy__wardrobe dives into the inter-generational struggle to find clothes that fit more than a tiny portion of women.
