One of the hardest things about being a parent to a non-verbal child is knowing they can’t tell you when something hurts. So you learn to listen differently. You notice the smallest changes, the subtlest movements, the expressions in their eyes, the things most people would never pick up on.
People are quick to label you as an “overprotective mum” when you keep pushing for answers — but when your child cannot speak for themselves, you have no choice except to trust your instincts and be their voice.
Oliver wasn’t himself. Something felt wrong long before anyone else could see it. It took him having a prolonged seizure and needing rescue medication for the alarm bells in my head to become impossible to ignore. I couldn’t shake the feeling that he might be in pain. I asked for X-rays, but at times it felt like they were only being done to reassure an anxious mum rather than because anyone genuinely believed there could be an injury.
The hardest part is that Oliver has an incredibly high pain threshold. He wasn’t crying hysterically. He couldn’t point to where it hurt or explain what was wrong. But I could see it — in his eyes, in the way he moved, in the tiny changes only someone who knows him completely would notice.
We were sent home. Then his foot became swollen, so we went back again. More X-rays were taken, and once again we were sent home - and told they wouldn’t have usually done anymore. A whole week later, someone finally reviewed them properly and confirmed what my instincts had been telling me all along: Oliver had a fracture. (Near his knee)💔
Being the parent of a non-verbal child means becoming their voice, their advocate, their comfort, and sometimes the only person willing to keep fighting when everyone else thinks you’re overreacting.
So no, I’ll never apologize for being “that mum.” Because while others saw worry, I saw my child silently trying to cope with a broken bone — and knowing he was carrying that pain without being able to tell anyone breaks my heart into a million pieces. ❤️🩹🥺
Oliver’s school trip was amazing—and I got to go along for the ride 🥹💙

Double @blueskies_ahead session after school ✨
Another amazing session with Cath! along with red light, the vibration plate, and the QRI Harmonic—a gentle therapy that uses light and sound frequencies to support his nervous system and help his brain and body work together. He had such a interesting session today. It’s honestly so fascinating watching how he responds to each part and takes it all in.
He did some amazing sitting today, leaning onto his hand and pushing through to hold himself upright, with some great head control 👏
So incredibly proud of our boy and everything he’s working through on his journey 💙🙌
This week, Oliver has shown us exactly what strong looks like. 💪✨ He’s been working so hard on his sitting! Using every bit of his strength to lift his head and pull himself up. Another great session at @blueskies_ahead putting in the practice, followed by some work on the vibration plate and red light therapy with Cath. So proud of his determination! 💙 🩵 ✨
Hard at work! 👊 Another brilliant session at @blueskies_ahead today. Oliver’s determination inspires me every day.
So, so proud ! Keep shining, my boy! 🩵✨
