I made a quick hop to Trinidad on the weekend to see my friend Paula's musical. When we met at the Cropper Writer's Retreat in 2016, we were both working on novels. Paula's draft evolved into a stage play and, being a lover of musicals and a multitalented artist, she wrote songs for it. A Trinbagonian musical! 🇹🇹 Arts Academy was brought to life by ENT Factor, an incredible and dedicated cast, sponsors, and a highly engaged and responsive audience. Maya is a young woman determined to become a member of the League of Extraordinary Actors. When she gets to the Arts Academy, she joins a class of talented, enthusiastic students. As they study, a tech billionaire schemes to replace them, and all actors, with AI. They band together and resist. It was an absolute delight to see Arts Academy on both Saturday and Sunday nights with two different friends based in Trinidad. The three of us fully enjoyed the musical along with a lively audience. I have never experienced a theater audience quite like the two I was a part of on the weekend. Everyone laughed loooud and looong. 😂 They offered commentary to one another. They sometimes answered the characters. The audience was in hilarious conversation with the cast because we had all completely bought in and committed to the outcome. I am so full of joy for my friend Paula who put her heart into this work. She wrote the story that wanted to be told, shared her ideas with others and integrated their feedback, made personal investments, asked for and accepted help, and built teams and trusted them to help her in bringing the Arts Academy to life. None of these are easy or without risk, but Paula is a star, a doer, an optimist, and a self-actualized person who believes in her artistic ability and business acumen. She did that shit, y'all, and I get to call her friend. 💖 Look out for the next production of Arts Academy and other productions by ENT Factor, and be sure to be in the audience next time.

Stepping into the role of Music Director for Arts Academy has been a truly inspiring experience. It was an honour to help bring this original work, masterfully written by @paulaajhamilton , to life for its premiere. What an exceptional cast! Their passion and dedication made every rehearsal room feel electric. I was equally grateful to collaborate with such a powerhouse artistic team: Kearn Samuel (Director), Abeo Jackson (Choreographer), and Paccino Emanuel (Assistant Choreographer).
