964RS spent all week with @eds_shine . His cut and polish brought it a long way. A lot of attention to detail shows paint depth it hasn’t had during my ownership. He finished at 7:30 tonight, and I quickly went to drop it off at @air__water . Excited to see it in the daylight tomorrow.
#964RS magnesium cup wheel restoration. It was hard to find anyone who I felt understood magnesium restoration and also wanted to actually do it. So I did it myself. Thank you to several folks including @eyesoreracing for answering questions and helping me figure this out. Short version of steps: strip wheels. Granite blast them lightly to remove oxidation. Out gas to remove moisture. Inspect for cracks, etc. Coat them with Alodine to create a chemical reaction and a thin chromium layer. Rinse with DI water. Dry them, the blue haze is the chromium layer. Power wash to remove residue. Rinse in DI water again. Outgas by bringing them to 350-400* for an hour. Cool them. Powder coat primer. Powder coat for color. Powder clear them for final sealer and finish.
No filler, etc. Pretty happy with the finished product.
When I bought this car, it had ducts replacing front lights for cooling. But whoever installed them never actually cut the bumper in order for them to work. I debated making them functional, but this doesn’t see track time during extreme ambient temps, so they aren’t really necessary. So I bought the original lenses. Grateful for @j_mendieta for 3d printing the mounting brackets for me. I’ll stick the ducts on the shelf waiting for me to get tired of the lenses. :) #964rs #maritimeblue #964 #rs #te37
Been a lot of fun piping this car together. It’s no longer a correct 1966 Giulia, but drives like it still has the spirit or feeling of the original. Just a lot more of it.
After 25 years with the same toolbox, it was time for an upgrade. Hoping this one is the last one I buy in my lifetime. But kinda out of space with it already. Funny to see how the socket set I bought before going on the road supporting race cars is still mostly intact. But also now I understand why I can never seem to find a .5” 18mm socket 🤦🏼‍♂️. I’m not quite happy yet. But looking for quality tools at a good price for anyone with a lead…
The Andrews are going electric! (never thought I’d say that) And maybe starting a new venture. follow @jollygoodtimeco for updates. Here is the story:
What has started as an interest in buying a fun beach city car is starting to frame up as a potential business opportunity. @alana_s_andrews and I are building a Fiat Multipla Jolly EV. (Think 1960s beach cruiser that seats 6) We’ve found a shop to work with in Italy who already has a hard top shell that has been restored. @_italianclassiccars is going to finish the build into a “jolly” - which is the open top version for us. It will be an EV. (others they have built pictured here). should seat 6 and be a riot. We look forward to seeing it be completed and taking delivery.
But this has gotten our wheels turning. The Fiat 500 Jolly recreations (the smaller 4 seater ones in this post) can be electrified in the same way. You can fit 4 EV Jolly’s in a shipping container from Italy to California. We think these would be really good replacements for golf carts in Palm Springs, on resorts, or in costal communities. I’ve imported enough cars that I think I could make this a turn key delivery, and we’re thinking about looking for dealers to manage retail sales.
So what do you think? Would you buy one? Know a dealer(s) who might be a good outlets? But follow @jollygoodtimeco and come along for the ride!
Boys took a break from homework to help drop the engine in. Was easy. Next step will be bolting up transmission, fuel, oil, and water. And a battery. And rear axle. And and and…
