“Dig”
Acrylic, charcoal, oil stick on paper
30x22
I was heavily inspired by my classmates and instructor from my art class at @huesartsupplyyxe to make this piece. The abstraction, the mixed media, the lines, the transparency, the joy, the reveal, the uncovering, the active, the quiet.
Thank you to @hjotay@evanrystrom@kath_mcmulkingrant@alliekellart@artbyhaileyweber and Lois!

Acrylic on Bedsheet

Still figuring out if I want to stretch this guy or leave him with some unfinished crumpled edges. Leaning towards the stretch, but time will tell!
This one was so much fun to paint, the colours just made me giddy. The bedsheet I used was 100% polyester which I gessoed with multiple layers. It was a neat experiment, but it was not my favorite surface to paint on. Plus, the clear gesso became cloudy and took away all of the great colour on the bedsheet blue and multicoloured stripes. I repainted those back on but it doesn’t have the same impact. So, I’m happy with the end result, but probably won’t paint on a bedsheet for a while 🤣.

It seems most of the Dinos I excavate in my paintings are facing the right. 🤷♂️

If you disassociate hard enough you may even see more than one dinosaur. 🤪

Thesis painting 2: returning after a long hiatus
I’ve been taking an art class and it has been allowing me to develop my bravery in the subjects that I work on. This painting has been staring at me for months, I wasn’t liking it. The colours were wrong, the hand wasn’t working, I don’t know. I still don’t know.
So I took a break and painted some things for fun, and I continue to paint those things for fun while constantly thinking about this painting.
I painted the ground to create better contrast, but I’m still not thrilled by it. I’m almost tempted to gesso over it and start again. I just might.
I started this piece with some great momentum, I still really love the strong lines in the background, I love the mushrooms and what they mean to me, and I have been excited to get the rest of the content on. Maybe I’m focusing too much on the hand and I need to worry more about the foreground?
This has been a huge insight for my research, even though I am doing art as a form of healing from teacher burnout, I am still finding it still comes with its own road blocks. The success of this is that I chose something ambitious for my skill level, and because of this I took an art class to increase my skill level, now I feel like I can tackle this, but my thoughts are that I need to do it from the beginning, not in the middle of the process. The question is, do I persevere? How do I apply this to my teaching practice? In the midst of my thesis writing, how does this decision also influence how I approach my research? Does abandoning your work mean you fail?

Designing this set has been the art project I craved for over a decade. I have not stopped thinking about it since August, and spent 3 months preparing the real thing for the actors. The show has opened now and I have been so excited for people to see it in real life!
I could not have done it without the generous help of the entire company; their hard work, advice, and experience to draw from was so supportive and reassuring. My consultations with my set design mentors and pals in the city had major impact on this process. Of course, my gratitude is extended thoroughly to my partner who had to be as obsessed with this project as me the entire time.
I love how collaborative theatre is, and I love how many people were so quick to help me realize this design. I feel like all the risks with this design paid off and I’m so proud of it! It’s my baby, and she’s all grown up and doin her thing. 🧡♥️💙
I cant wait for the next one!
