When I look at you, I hear laughter spilling from the kitchen. I see piles of pillows waiting to be leapt into, your dad’s footsteps thundering through the house with tiny feet chasing close behind. I hear you asking me to turn the music up in the car, and catch you in the rearview mirror, dancing with more attitude than anyone I know.
I smell cookies in the oven and see the beautiful mess of you learning how to help. I see cannonballs in the backyard, sleepy eyes climbing into my bed before sunrise, little drawings of butterflies and our family, sparkly cowboy boots, dresses scattered everywhere. I hear Wheels on the Bus for the hundredth time, watch your face light up at the sound of the trash truck every Monday, and feel blonde curls slipping through my fingertips
I’m holding onto the most ordinary moments knowing I will look back and realize they were the most extraordinary thing of all.
