650 J. M. W. Turner - 29 November 2025 - Norham Castle, Sunrise. This is one of the group of unfinished oils based on a plate in the Liber Studiorum, R. 57 (see Nos.620-23) and like these can be roughly, and tentatively, dated c.1835-40. It could however be still later and marks the extreme of Turner's development from the topographical watercolour of c.1798 (No.640). ***NOTICE*** This is my last post in this series, contact me if you want to know more #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle #sunrise @nightcafestudio

649 J. M. W. Turner - 28 November 2025 - Norham Castle. Retaining the general outline of the castle as in the Rivers of England and Liber versions, this 'colourbeginning' is nevertheless the closest of the 'Norham' designs to the painting probably executed in the late 1830s (No.650), and, it may be, immediately precedes it in time. Finberg suggested that Tamworth Castle was the subject of this 'colour-beginning' but its affinities with the Norham series leave little doubt of its starting point. #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle @nightcafestudio

648 J. M. W. Turner - 28 November 2025 - Norham Castle - Moonrise. Rawlinson No.522; the plate illustrates The Provincial Antiquities of Scotland in Cadell's edition of Scott's Prose Works, 1834-6. The finished watercolour from which it derives was in Munro's collection and later in America. Rawlinson considered the print 'perhaps the most beautiful of Turner's many engraved renderings of Norham Castle.' #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle #moonrise @nightcafestudio

647 J. M. W. Turner - 27 November 2025 - Norham Castle. Rawlinson No.317. It is not known for what purpose this plate was engraved. Turner's drawing for the Rivers of England series (No.645) was evidently the original for it; and Rawlinson records a tradition that it was intended for the Literary Souvenir, an illustrated annual for which five other of Turner's designs were used, including the large 'Richmond Hill' watercolour (No.257; Rawlinson No.314). #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle @nightcafestudio

645 J. M. W. Turner - 25 November 2025 - Norham Castle on the River Tweed. Engraved in mezzotint by C. Turner, 1824, for The Rivers of England Part II pl.i (Rawlinson No.756). The subject is a modification, smaller in format, of the design (T.B.CXVIII-D) for the Liber Studiorum plate mezzotinted by C. Turner in 1816 (No.643). Cooke's accounts show that he paid Turner eight guineas for the loan of the drawing in 1822. It has been argued, by Finley (1973, PP.386ff.), that this watercolour marks the beginning of Turner's application of prismatic colour theory in his work. #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle #river #tweed @nightcafestudio

644 J. M. W. Turner - 24 November 2025 - Norham Castle. The range of heavy colours employed in this 'colourbeginning' suggests a date similar to that of the 'colourbeginnings' of Tivoli, T.B.CXCVI-U and CXCVII-A (Nos. 183 and 182). The design seems to represent a halfway stage between the early watercolours (Nos.639 and 640) and the Rivers of England design of about 1822, which was also to draw on the composition of the Liber Studiorum plate of the subject (No.643). Compare this study with the later version, T.B.CCL XIII-72 (No.649). There is a watercolour of a lake among low hills on the verso. #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle @nightcafestudio

642 J. M. W. Turner - 23 November 2025 - Norham Castle. The finished drawing for the Liber Studiorum plate (No.643), which is inscribed 'the drawing in possession of the late Lord Lascells'; derived from the sketches in T.B.XXXIV f.57' and LIII ff.44v and 45r. This design is in fact much modified from that composition and was to form the basis of the Rivers of England drawing (No. 645). Turner published the drawing as 'P' for Pastoral; but it would perhaps have been more appropriately grouped with such plates as the 'River Wye' (R.48), published as 'Epic Pastoral'. #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle @nightcafestudio

641 J. M. W. Turner - 23 November 2025 - ‘Helmsley’ Sketchbook - Norham Castle. This book includes views of Durham and Peel Castles, Search documents and file names for text d en route to Edinburgh in 1801; on ff.91v and 92v there is a pencil sketch of Edinburgh from a distance. ff.44v and 45 show almost the slightest of ten sketches of Norham (ff.42v to 50), the starting point for the series of later variations, in particular the Liber Studiorum design and the Rivers of England illustration (Nos.642, 645). #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #helmsley #norham #castle @nightcafestudio

640 J. M. W. Turner - 22 November 2025 - Norham Castle. Another version of the subject is now in a private collection, U. K. It is not certain which of the two finished watercolours was that exhibited as 'Norham Castle on the Tweed, Summer's Morn' with a quotation from Thompson's Seasons at the R.A. 1798 (43); Finberg (1961, p.460) says that this was the Lascelles drawing subsequently owned by Laundy Walters; but in his Liber catalogue he states that the drawing owned by Lord Lascelles was not the Walters drawing but the Thwaites drawing, catalogued here. The subject is based on a pencil drawing in the 'North of England' sketchbook, f.57r, and this watercolour may have been executed after the two large-scale colour studies,T.B. L-B and c (see No.639). #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle @nightcafestudio

639 J. M. W. Turner - 21 November 2025 - Norham Castle. Derived from the pencil drawing in the 'North of England' sketchbook (No.23). Like T.B.I-C, this study is built up in layers of delicate washes - cream, pink and pale blue underneath darker local colour. Much use is made of wiping-out lights. The experimental process of applying watercolour in thin glazes is characteristic of Turner's technical preoccupations during the closing years of the century, and reflects the new attitudes to picture construction, tonality and lighting which he was acquiring from his work in oil from 1796 onwards. #textoimage #texttoimage #aiart #williamturner #turner #tategallery #norham #castle @nightcafestudio
