This weeks Tech Tip Tuesday is about your brake fluid. It is important to swap out your brake fluid at regular intervals, usually every 2 years. It is especially important if you have DOT 4 as DOT 4 is hygroscopic and will absorb moisture from the air and start causing corrosion inside the braking system. Even though DOT 5 isn’t as hygroscopic, it can still break down and turn into a silicone gel inside the system. It is always cheaper to perform preventative maintenance than to repair damaged caused by a lack of.

Part 3 of 3. The final video of this weeks Tech Tip Tuesday where we are going over the basics of pushrod adjustment. Letting the lifter bleed down is very important before rotating the motor over to prevent valve-to-piston contact. It also is a good indicator, but not a guarantee, that you are at least inside the hydraulic range of the lifter. Once you have confirmed lifter bleed down, you are ready to install your pushrod cover and move on. We know this was a longer series of videos but hope it is helpful to understand the basics of pushrod adjustment in your Harley motor.

Part 2 of 3. This weeks Tech Tip Tuesday is long but important. It is the basics of pushrod adjustment and what you need to know to do it correctly and safely. Knowing what lifters you have installed is a key factor. Different lifters need a different amount of pre-load. While the industry standard is around .200” total travel, not all lifters use this. A short travel lifter may only have .115” of total travel, maybe less. And obviously solid lifters do not have any hydraulic travel. These are just a couple examples of different lifters that all require a different amount of pre-load. Once you know the lifter and the thread pitch you can do some basic math to figure out how many rotations you need to achieve proper pre-load. Once you know how many rotations you need, you are ready to find your zero lash and add that number of rotations to properly pre-load the lifter.

Part 1 of 3 This weeks Tech Tip Tuesday is long, 3 videos, but very important. Pushrod adjustment is critical to getting your motor running correctly. However, if it done improperly, it can lead to noisy top end, lack of performance and potentially damaged parts. The first step is knowing the thread pitch of your pushrod. We will talk about why in a later video. Then making sure the cylinder you are adjusting is on its base circle. If the motor is already together and you are undoing the adjustment and then redoing it, make sure you are on the base circle BEFORE you remove the pushrods. Not doing so could lead to damage. Make sure to watch all three videos to better understand the basics of pushrod adjustment.

This weeks Tech Tip Tuesday is about your ACR’s (automatic compression releases) On more than a few occasions we have seen these be loose on motors when they come into the shop. So if you are anywhere near the rocker box cover/top end, we always recommend throwing a torque wrench on them to make sure they are tight. If it is loose, we suggest pulling it all the way out to clean any carbon buildup on the copper ring and reapply the proper Loctite before reinstalling them. Always blow out the hole with compressed air BEFORE removing the ACR to prevent dirt and whatever else is up there from falling into your engine.

This weeks Tech Tip Tuesday is about connecting rod alignment pins. They are a critical tool that can help confirm if your flywheels have an issue. Usually they are used before the flywheel is rebuilt help diagnose concerns, but on this engine the piston protrusion was angled on both cylinders so we used it to double check the work that was done on the flywheels and found an issue. The tool is supposed to touch both sides of the case at the same time and we would use two .0015” feeler gauges to confirm, but these were so far off, we didn’t need to use them.

This weeks Tuesday Tech Tip is for anyone with their oil pump removed from the motor, on an evolution engine. This check ball is what prevents the engine from sumping while not running. If you have ever started your bike, mostly on bottom breathers, and had oil come out the breather line, it was because oil sumped into your bottom end while sitting. Head breathers sump also but they typically do not dump the dumped oil when started. Lapping the seat of the check ball in the pump body, and replacing check ball with a new one, will give your bike the best chance at preventing sumping while sitting. It is very important to clean all the lapping compound out after you are done. That is why we say this is for people with the pump off the bike. If you attempt to to do this lapping while the pump is installed, you can get lapping compound inside the engine, which would not be great 😂

Quick comparison between some smoked transmission bearings and some brand new bearings. They say loose is fast, but there is such a thing as too loose. These old bearings definitely fall under the too loose category.
