Delighted to join members and friends of the Burnaby North Lawn Bowling Club for the 2026 season opening on a sunny day. The club is a live example of community in action. Jonathan and I got to know each other coming up through the nomination process in 2014. In fact, I think Jonathan and I were nominated within weeks of each other. Jonathan would go on to be one of the most influential and effective cabinet ministers in Canada. I got to work with him in the riding, at Pacific caucus, and I was in fact his parliamentary secretary for fisheries and oceans for a good six weeks. Eventually, we even got to sit around the cabinet table together. I remember passing him a note saying that we'd have to stop agreeing so often because people were going to start thinking that we were colluding together. I consider it a great privilege to have worked so closely with Jonathan and to call him a close personal friend. I'm disappointed for Canada that he's no longer serving in our cabinet, but given Prime Minister Mark Carney's strategy which he articulated at the WEF and that we've been implementing, Jonathan is going to be a central player in that plan. The impact that I've seen Jonathan make in North Vancouver and then for all of Canada is now going to be made globally, and that's a good thing for all of us as Canadians and for the world as a whole. @jonathanwnv

[Spring Economic Update 2026] We are committed to building stronger and safer communities. We propose $75 million for the Canada Community Security Program to help protect communities from hate-motivated incidents and improve safety. Additional investments include $755 million to strengthen participation in sport and support Canadian athletes, as well as the establishment of Canada’s first dedicated Financial Crimes Agency to combat serious and complex financial crimes, including fraud and money laundering. [Spring Economic Update 2026] A key priority is supporting workers and young people. Through the launch of Team Canada Strong, we will recruit, train, and hire between 80,000 and 100,000 new Red Seal skilled trades workers by 2030–31. This initiative will create direct, paid pathways for young Canadians to contribute to building housing, infrastructure, and defense capacity at the scale and speed required. To support this effort, the government is investing $2 billion to help young people enter the skilled trades, providing up to $10,000 in apprenticeship supports for employers, particularly small and medium-sized businesses, and making education more affordable by extending enhanced Canada Student Grants and interest-free Canada Student Loans for the 2026–2027 academic year. As a new member of BCAN, I’m excited to work alongside colleagues in the House and Senate to help advance projects that will strengthen Canada’s economy and connect communities across the country. Today, our government announced consultations with Indigenous Peoples, provinces and territories, and Canadians on proposed changes to streamline federal reviews and ensure major project decision-making timelines take no longer than one year once all required project information has been submitted. This includes two new discussion papers focused on: - Getting major projects built in Canada - Strengthening One Canadian Economy through trade and transportation These proposed reforms would create a more predictable and efficient regulatory process, strengthen supply chains, and give investors and project proponents the certainty needed to build and grow here in Canada. [Spring Economic Update 2026] To strengthen Canada’s long-term economic growth, we are advancing nation-building initiatives. This includes launching the Canada Strong Fund, a new sovereign wealth fund capitalized at $25 billion to invest in projects and companies driving Canada’s economic transformation. In addition, we are advancing nation-building projects through the Major Projects Office. The government is also taking steps to resolve air passenger complaints more efficiently by introducing a neutral, third-party dispute resolution system, while improving regulations to ensure fairness and timely compensation for travellers. Expanding international trade is another important pillar of our strategy. Canada has recently signed new agreements with different countries, to support domestic exports while also strengthening Canada’s domestic manufacturing sector, and create new opportunities for Canadian businesses. [Spring Economic Update 2026] Making life more affordable for Canadians remains central to our plan. Our government is investing $42 million to support factory-built housing and accelerating $7 billion in low-cost loans to help build up to 16,500 new rental homes. In addition, we are reducing the contribution rate for the base Canada Pension Plan, which will result in annual savings for workers while maintaining the Plan’s long-term sustainability. Measures are also being taken to simplify access to the Disability Tax Credit, ensuring that individuals with long-term medical conditions can more easily receive the support they need.
