Sonette worked with TERRA+ on many of the projects initiated by the City of Cape Town as a landscape architect in the urban design branch of the city. She is remembered as a compassionate, determined and sincere individual who was passionate about the role of landscape architects in the public realm. Reviving the heart of Bonteheuwel 🌿✨
The Town Centre Upgrade transforms Freedom Square, a Provincial Heritage Site and symbol of resilience, into a vibrant, accessible community hub. The design preserves historic elements like the Old Library Staircase, improves routes and entrances, adds flexible spaces for markets and events, and introduces over sixty indigenous trees to create a greener, cooler environment.
Public art by local artist @lorenzo_nassimbeni and participating local artists brings colour and identity into the space, from murals to children’s artwork embedded in the central plaza.
A renewed Freedom Square for gathering, creativity, and community pride. 🤝💛
🌿Bertha Retreat Landscape Design
We created connected, safe outdoor spaces inspired by equality, community and the surrounding fynbos landscape. With a central firepit, outdoor “rooms,” and indigenous planting, the design blends re-wilding, foraging gardens and local knowledge to echo the natural patterns of the Stellenbosch mountains. ✨
