10 years of this absolute masterpiece. It’s no secret that this is one of my favorite records of all time. It’s the peak of modern technical thrash and a classic in its own right. In a genre often too stale and predictable to my ears, Vektor changed the game, reinventing thrash while recharging it at the same time. The fusion with progressive rock and progressive metal, the time shifting rhythmic patterns, the guitar wizardry, mind-boggling riffs, frenetic and crazed soloing, the Rush-inspired sci-fi storytelling, and the speed of it all; everything adds to a larger than life whole. That this was created by humans is kind of hard for me to fathom. I could talk about this album for hours. It showed the way for what would become Terminalist, obviously inspiring the band name. However, being a fan of Vektor has been conflicted. After a European tour, where I was lucky to catch them in Austria, the line-up split. Later, allegations of abuse, assault and hazardous behavior were leveled at front man David DiSanto. Looking from the outside, things could’ve been handled better and it hasn’t really been the same since. There is a distance between the music and its creator, and while I personally still love the music, I’ve felt the need to keep a professional distance. This was probably best exemplified when a member of Vektor was so kind as to reach out to us to offer a guest solo while we were in the early stages of writing ‘The Crisis as Condition’. We declined. Not because of pressure but because we thought it was the right thing to do. Word says that a new Vektor record will be out next year. I look forward to listen to it, of course, but it’s going to be a different experience. And it’s going to be hard to top this one. Impossible, even. Your relation with music changes over time. But this record? This is still one of the best ever. It’s one of the very few pieces of music where I can say, without a doubt, that ‘Terminal Redux’ changed my life. And all for the better. @vektormetal @earacherecords

Professor Hartmut Rosa is one of the world’s most renowned sociologists and one of the most important thinkers of today. His theory of social acceleration and resonance is a poignant diagnosis of modernity as defined by the increase of speed. Acceleration is why you always experience a lack of time; why you have to run faster and faster just to stay in the same place; why stress, alienation and burnout are common ills of today. Resonance is, on the other hand, an antidote to the loss of meaning found in accelerated life. It’s a way of opening up, finding experiences and oases of deceleration where meaning reappears in resonance with the world, be it music, nature, art, community. Rosa’s work has proven influential all over the world. This also ascribes to Terminalist where the lyrics for the song ‘Frenetic Standstill’ are lifted directly from his work. In fact, ‘frenetic standstill’ is a term of his, describing how social formations – i.e. the family entity, the workplace – remain rigid but with higher frequencies of replacement. Everything stays the same, but goes faster and faster. Or: Everything changes, yet nothing truly changes. Also, he’s a big fan of Savatage. How cool is that?

Turns out global warming is just a hoax. There is no climate crisis. Also, extreme inequality is beneficial, billionaires are good, and AI will fix everything. Keep calm and carry on. The system works.

Yesterday, I had the pleasure of meeting political scientist Mikkel Vedby Rasmussen, the author of ‘Krisesamfundet’ (‘The Crisis Society’, 2021). This was the book that spawned the concept and lyrics for ‘The Crisis as Condition’. This is also from where I pulled the quote “those that don’t make history will be made history”, a paraphrase of Hegel. Briefly put, Rasmussen analyzes how the Covid pandemic blew up the framework of politics. The so-called end of history was no longer, politics as a one-way street towards more open markets, more globalization and proliferation of liberal democracy was over. It was a rebirth of ideological differences and agency but also containing the risk of sliding towards authoritarianism and strongman politics. It was history split open, restarting. On this day, 4 years after the Russian invasion of Ukraine and with the rest of the world going down the drain, this is still painfully relevant. The fight for the future is not over.

Yesterday, Rebecca Adler-Nissen, Professor of Political Science at the University of Copenhagen and director of research center CAISA, shed light on the behind-the-scenes agenda of big tech billionaires and Trump donors on Danish public tv. It reads like science fiction but with real life consequences. Good to see the disruptive praxis of these people entering the mainstream conversation. Translated and subtitled by me. @dr2tv @university_of_copenhagen @clement_kjersgaard

Flashy riffs, furious hybrids and haunting atmospheres. 2025 brought a bit of everything from true-to-form genre outputs and a couple of outliers. Here are this year’s favorites in the Terminalist camp. If you haven’t checked them out, do so. Enjoy. @species_of_metal @cryptosis_band @stresstestpdx @gostaberlingssaga @momomoyouth @warringtonruncorn
