What a beautiful evening last Saturday… and what a turnout once again. Thank you, enthusiastic audience, artists, and extended TENT crew! During this nineteenth edition of Back to Base, nine talented circus artists presented acts that proved that beauty lies in the details. Special thanks as well to our host, Lily Nolan, who effortlessly guided us through the worlds and ideas of this program. • Wat een prachtige avond afgelopen zaterdag... en wat waren jullie weer met velen. Dank jullie wel, enthousiast publiek, makers en uitgebreide TENT-crew! Tijdens deze negentiende Back to Base toonden 9 getalenteerde circuskunstenaars acts die bewezen dat schoonheid in de details schuilt: Het precisiespel van Sara Bärend, waarin elke beweging, van vinger tot teen, het verschil kon betekenen tussen aanwezig zijn en al verdwenen. De verveelde reizigers, Valerie Weindel, Bela Bouchain en Rune Jansen, lieten zich door de cadans van de metro verleiden tot een schitterend spel met jongleren en Chinese Pole. We maakten de rit van ons leven. De vriendelijke wezens van CRIAS, die met een verbluffende bewegingstaal een wereld oproepen waarin het voelt alsof we opnieuw kunnen beginnen. Natalie Aldana Bedoya, Lily Nolet en Apolline Dubourg, die als geen ander de mimiek en fysiek van drie insecten belichaamden, en ons via globe en acrobatiek meenamen naar een verborgen wereld tussen het gras. En Erin Skye, die ons met haar doorleefde acrobatische lichaam in de straps liet ervaren hoe het geometrische vloeibaar wordt en wiskunde poëzie. Veel dank ook aan onze host, Lily Nolan, die ons moeiteloos meenam door de werelden en ideeën van dit programma. OUR HOST • Handstand artist and acrobat @lily_soleil_returns to Back to Base, this time as the host. Lily has performed at Circusplaneet (BE), Funky Friday (BE), Cergy Soit (FR), and Cirque Mania (NL), and previously hosted events including Takeoff #14 and the Codarts Circus Arts graduation show in Rotterdam. • Handstand artist Lily Nolan keert terug naar Back to Base, ditmaal als host. FIFTH ACT • After years of performing as a flyer and handstand artist in Europe, @Erin.Skye.Circus returns to aerial straps, an intensely physical and explosive circus discipline. With Low, she reveals a different side: softer and more layered. • Na jaren optreden als flyer en handstandartiest in Europa, keert Erin Skye terug naar de aerial straps, een uiterst explosieve en fysieke circusdiscipline. Met Low laat zij een andere kant zien: zachter, gelaagder. Deze nieuwe bewegingstaal ontstond vanuit een beperking: sinds 2025 herstelt Erin van een ernstige schouderblessure die haar dwingt anders te bewegen en te denken. Ze verlegt haar ophangpunten van handen en schouders naar knieën, heupen en romp en integreert grondwerk en dans in haar beweging. Het resultaat is een vloeiende, organische bewegingstaal die afwijkt van de traditionele, op kracht gebaseerde esthetiek. FOURTH ACT • Who doesn’t know the fragile, precious ball that the dung beetle rolls in front of it? For the trio act Tiny, this insect became an important source of inspiration. The performance zooms in on the bustling life between the grass, where the existence of three insects comes to life. In de driekoppige act Tiny wordt er ingezoomd op het krioelende leven tussen het gras, waar met technieken als globe walking, acrobatiek en fysiek theater het bestaan van drie insecten tot leven komt. Met humor, spanning en samenwerking doen zij er alles aan om te overleven en hun kostbare bal te te beschermen en te verplaatsen. Dat vraagt om flink wat teamwork en veerkracht. THIRD ACT • When two beings enter a parallel universe, their boundaries begin to blur and they merge into one: a homúnculo. This work in progress brings two former classmates @rafa_mgonzalez @georgiemoves back together after a long time apart. They create a physical and poetic togetherness where connection exceeds the sum of its parts. • Wanneer twee wezens in een parallel universum belanden, vervagen hun grenzen en versmelten zij tot één: een homúnculo. Een veranderlijke vorm waarin lichamen abstraheren en gezichten en ledematen zich vermenigvuldigen, en waarin handbalanceren een vorm van communicatie wordt. Dit work in progress brengt twee voormalige studiegenoten na lange tijd weer samen. Ze creëren een fysieke en poëtische vorm van samenzijn, waarin verbinding iets kan voortbrengen dat groter is dan de som der delen. SECOND ACT • Do you think circus is loud, grand, and driven by risk? Juggler @try.drop.repeat offers a different perspective. She presents a form of circus in which beauty lies in the details and physical sensations become almost tangible. • Jongleur Sara Bärend presenteert een vorm van circus waarin de schoonheid in de details schuilt en fysieke sensaties bijna tastbaar worden. In Mycelium 2.0, een jongleerwerk geïnspireerd op de organische kwaliteit van paddenstoelen en de open- en sluitbeweging van hun hoeden, toont ze een wereld waarin zorg en gevoeligheid centraal staan. Wie goed kijkt, voelt en luistert, ziet hoe zij niet de jongleerballen domineert, maar ermee samenwerkt - en hoe dat het spel verandert. FIRST ACT • In Locomonday, Valerie Weindel, Bela Bouchain, and Rune Jansen present a playful exploration of daydreaming and the unexpected within the everyday. @duo_bally @rune_jansen_hj • Valerie Weindel, Bela Bouchain, and Rune Jansen verbeelden drie reizigers in de metro: vreemden rond dezelfde stang, verbonden door de cadans van de rit. In dat gedeelde moment krijgt de verbeelding langzaam de ruimte. Met een jongleerbal, Chinese paal en beweging ontstaat een dromerige wereld vol humor en herkenning, waarin kleine sociale ongemakken zichtbaar worden. "Iedereen maakt zich weleens belachelijk; wat blijft hangen is niet de fout zelf, maar hoe iemand ermee omgaat."
